Wood strikes gold again!
Review of Dinnerladies - The Complete Series DVD by
TheDoctor13
Advantages: A brilliant observational comedy!
Disadvantages: No special features, misleading cover art.
This sitcom is like no other, it originally aired in '98 during the time when comedies filmed in front of a studio audience seemed old. This was a brave choice by the writer, the multi-talented Victoria Wood, because it might have been slated for being old fashioned and cheesy, but it was not, instead there was something new and refreshing about this comedy. Apparently it was just an experiment to see whether she could write a sitcom, and in my opinion ... ...name, it takes part in a factory canteen and follows the lives of the workers there. The characters are Bren (Wood), Tony (Andrew Dunn), Dolly (Thelma Barlow), Jean (Anne Reid), Twinkle (Maxine Peake), Anita (Shobna Gulati), Stan (Duncan Preston), Philippa (Celia Imrie), Jane (Sue Devaney) and Petula (Julie Walters). Each of these characters are brilliantly cast and written, you will definitely feel like you've met at least one of them before. That's ...

The Young Ones Series 1 & 2
Review of The Young Ones Series 1 by
markyeadon
Advantages: Fantastic comedy that with have your sides hurting
Disadvantages: There are none - well for me anyway
I grew up with the young Ones (not literally) and was a huge fan, even to the point of going to fancy dress parties dressed up as Vivian, complete with hair spiked up and silver stars on my forehead. I used to watch each episode over and over again until i knew all the words off by heart - sad i know, but this humour really appealed to me.
I now have both series on DVD and even my kids love them, it is classic comedy. Also when you watch them now, ...

The hilarious world of antiques!
Review of Acorn Antiques DVD by
TheDoctor13
Advantages: 13 of the best sketches around
Disadvantages: No extras
...first became aware of the Acorn Antiques sketches on Channel 4’s 100 Greatest Comedy Sketches, it rated highly on it, and the couple of minutes of footage that was shown made me laugh so hard, I instantly became a fan!
I started to hunt for any DVD’s that would include these hilarious sketches, I was aware that they came from the TV show “Victoria Wood As Seen On TV” but I couldn’t find a DVD of it. Then a few months later I found that they were ... ...included all 13 editions of Acorn Antiques (running about 5 minutes each, apart from the 12th which runs for about 10 minutes, as it is a mock behind the scenes look at how the fictional soup is made) including the continuity announcements that were on before each sketches, read by the wonderful Susie Blake. The best thing about Acorn Antiques is how it hasn’t dated, although it spoofs a soup that was on before my time and still (as well as my friends) ...

Have I Got News For You...
Review of Not The Nine O'Clock News - The Best Of Not The Nine O'Clock News - Vol. 1 DVD by
okayblue
Advantages: Timeless comedy. Sheer Genius
Disadvantages: Frustrating scene selection. Lack of special features
...famous, and although I was not around to see the show air originally, I recognised many of them from having featured on various 100 Greatests and comedy tribute shows. The most famous of which included are the 'Gerald the Gorilla' Sketch, which sees an interviewer discussing with a zookeeper and his eloquent and well-spoken gorilla friend Gerald about his capture. He remarks "When I caught Gerald in '68, he was completely wild." "Wild? I was practically ... ...is an exceptional talent and not bad to look at (a shame she is no longer in the business). She is currently married to Billy Connelly, indeed, Billy makes an appearance in pone of the sketches here. As the spoof newsreader she mimicks Angela Rippons delivery perfectly, but was at her best impersonating Moira Stewart or showing off her voice in the end-of-show musical numbers. Mel Smith and Griff-Rys Jones, who will also undoubtedly be familiar faces, ...

The Young Ones Series Two
Review of The Young Ones Series 2 by
ricacac
Advantages: Awesome
Disadvantages: Only Two Series
...Nigel Planer and Christopher Ryan, the four are an AWESOME combination. This is 1980's comedy at its finest. I have a wide variety of comedy series DVD's, and this is the best, i cannot find another to match it. Bottom has sparkles of Ric and Adrians genius, but does not beat this series of the young ones. Although the first series was not exceptional, the second shows the quality of acting, and the comic of the writers. It brings out the MANICISM ...
