Not about bees, is it?
Review of The Sting DVD by
l-m-n-o-p
Advantages: Brilliant twists, fantastic acting
Disadvantages: Slightly long, but that's nit-picking
When I first heard of The Sting, I thought it was a horror movie about killer bees. Hence my surprise when I found out that it won the 1973 Best Picture and Best Director Oscars. However, since then I realised that it was a conman movie, and I liked the sound of this version even more. Particularly as I'm a huge fan of the BBC TV series Hustle, which in fact did a complete copy of this story for one of the episodes in the first series. So, if you ... ...the tail, which kind of spoils it.
The story is set in Illinois in 1936, during the depression, and goes as follows: Robert Redford plays a young conman named Johnny Hooker, who plays the short-con, i.e. taking small amounts of money at a time from people in the street. After taking several thousand dollars from a man, his partner is murdered by crime boss Doyle Lonnegan (Robert Shaw). So he tries to track down the crook responsible and get revenge. ...

Struck By The Moon
Review of Moonstruck (Wide Screen) by
thefunkyboi
Advantages: Cher at her best
Disadvantages: Out dated a little
After all this time I thought it best to write a review of some sort, so here I am. I was only 2 years old when this first came out, but I love Cher and this is one of her best movies!
A romantic farce set in New Yorks Little Italy, but totally free of the mafia, and criss crossing several couples who all seem to be effected by a huge full moon. A young widow, (Cher), accepts a proposal, but falls for her fiance's estranged brother, the loving couple ... ...his wife finds herself dinning with a man who has just been jilted by his young student, just as he was before in an incident witnessed by the young widow......
Atlthough director Norman Jewison and the films music rather overdo the amore and Italian openess. Still, there are winning performances from Cher, (Oscar winner), Nicholas cage, as the hairy ape who sweeps her off her feet, and Olympia Dukakis and Vincent Garcia as her parents.
A little ...

Another night of hearin' myself talk, talk, talk
Review of Pillow Talk DVD by
CaptainDisaster
Advantages: Cast, script, most things really
Disadvantages: A bit slow at times
Pillow Talk is a wonderful romantic comedy which has hardly aged a bit in the decades since its release. Remade a couple of years ago into the excellent Down With Love, this one can still hold its head up high (and though I personally still like the latter film more, I know that many prefer the original.) Jan Morrow (Doris Day) is a highly successful career woman, who is unfortunate in that she has to share a party phone line with playboy Brad Allen ... ...All in all, Pillow Talk is an extremely enjoyable film thanks to a witty script and an enthusiastic cast. Hudson and Day are terrific whether sparring or wooing, and their phone encounters contain some sparkling dialogue. Tony Randall as the rich wannabe husband who can't understand is very funny, particularly when taking great delight in Brad's failures (though he does turn out to be sort of a good friend in the end!) His performance is not all ...

How did he get it so right ?
Review of The Producers (Special Edition) by
melonballer
Advantages: Mel Brook on top form
Disadvantages: Availability
...to write anything more because the other two guys have wonderful taste and are more than capable of telling you just how good this film is.
But according to IMBD there’s going to be another film in 2005 called The Producers starring some of today’s rising young stars. This is sacrilege. Can you imagine anyone better than Gene Wilder? Can you imagine a young hunky muscled Adonis playing opposite Richard Prior? They’re playing with history.
But why ... ...remake it? Just re-release the original on DVD with deleted scenes, a nice feature documentary of the making and interview with Mel Brooks and sell it at an inflated cost as a special edition and you can scrape a few extra dollars out of this wonderful flick. So anyway I’ve had my rant and I want you to see this film. So I will conform to the normal confines of a review and try not to bully you all the way to the Video shop.
Perfect performances ...
