Small upheaval in newsroom, not many laughs.
Review of Drop The Dead Donkey - Series 1 DVD by
Chouchinciao
Advantages: Sharply observed current affairs humour
Disadvantages: Stereotyped characters
Drop the Dead Donkey was a Channel 4 production and regarded as cutting-edge humour in its time. It broke new ground in its current affairs satire and its office-based sitcom, and was a frequent allusion in newspaper columns and conversations round the coffee machine. I enjoyed it at the time, and having missed the re-runs, thought it was worth another look.
It is set in the newsroom of an independent TV station. In the first episode the characters ... ...lacking in authority, Alex the thrusting professional deputy editor, Damian who would mug his grandmother for a good story, Dave, a bit of a lad, Gus the smooth corporate spy, Henry the lecherous old hack turned newsreader, Sally the posh airhead newsreader. The new ingredient in the standard sitcom mix is the current affairs background which the team is reporting on. Each episode's script was left open until the last minute to let breaking news ...

Laugh out loud comedy
Review of Bowfinger DVD by
Janeyboo
Advantages: Very funny
Disadvantages: None
...nor acknowledges that losers exist. Bowfinger (Martin) is a failed film producer who decides to hire Eddie Murphy for his latest film. Except he can't afford him. So he and his dodgy collection of Mexican film makers and wannabee actors film Murphy without his knowledge. Luckily Murphy is a member of a weird wacko religion called Mindhead which is astonishingly similar to Scientology in that they believe in aliens and are deeply paranoid.
Murphy ... ...aliens (which he is). Meanwhile Heather Graham as the ingenue actress shags her way up the ladder. Favorite line: "Where do I go to be an actress? I've given myself a week to make it!"
This is a very funny film, sarky and witty. Eddie Murphy shows just what a talented comedien he is and Steve Martin is triumphant. It has a feelgood ending but it's not the usual saccharine comedy fayre.
Thoroughly recommend as a laugh out loud comedy and a look ...

Review of Bowfinger (Wide Screen) by
Punkychik
Advantages: great cast
Disadvantages: not as funny as expected.
...a self titled 'business' called Bowfinger International Movies, despite having never made a movie to date. Bowfinger proceeds to arrange a meeting with his clientele. After failing to persuade a director, or Kit Ramsey to work on his project, the group continue to make the film on their own, taking hidden footage of Kit whilst about his day to day business. This is difficult at the best of times, let alone when trying to complete such a project on ... ...to him they are.
Bowfinger - Steve Martin
Kit Ramsey - Eddie Murphy
Daisy - Heather Graham
This is another film to add to a long list, in which Murphy plays multiple characters. Whilst Murphy is evidently good at such roles, it is more than a little disappointing to see him being type cast. A fresh new face perhaps would have been nice, instead of plumping for the good, but not great, reliable Eddie Murphy.
The story was all just a little too ...

You may die of embarrassment! in a funny way
Review of Death At A Funeral DVD by
IzzyS
Advantages: Its pretty funny, Cast/performances,
Disadvantages: A bit similar to TV shows like the worst week of my life
- Introduction -
Death at a Funeral is a British movie which I heard about recently and it sounded quite funny and interesting, so I thought I'd give it a go. It stars Kris Marshall, who is more well known as the rather dumb Nick from My Family. I thought it would be good to see a new British movie, so I rented this and this is what its all about and what I thought about it.
- Main Credits (non-actors, which are mentioned further on in the review) ... ...main acting cast) -
Death at a funeral is all about the family and friends that meet up at a funeral. This turns out to be quite an eventful funeral, that doesn't entirely go to plan, thanks to a shocking revelation about the deceased (which I won't spoil for you) and some embarrassing behaviour displayed by one of the attendees, who was unknowingly given hallucinagenic drugs (sp?).
The movie stars Kris Marshall, Keeley Hawes, Matthew Macfadyen, ...
