Arizona Dream is one of those rare films that you usually discover only when other people tell you about them. That is not because the movie is bad. It is because the movie is so much loaded with symbolism and sub-text meaning that it would be impossible for it to be a hit in the popular box office. I would definitely recommend that before you see this film, you find out a bit more about its Yougoslavian director: Emir Kusturica. He's other films ...
...the alternative european cinema. In this film however, he manages in a spectacular way to infiltrate his style and lyrisism into what seems an "all american" movie. The scrypt is at times extremely cryptic and because of the slow pace in which the events take place, one might feel that there is everything and nothing going on at the same time. I was amazed when I first saw this film, it is a wonderful film to get lost in and I was surprised I hadn't heard of it before. I am a great Lee Evans fan and so searched out this dvd and was surprised at what a great story it had. As said it the other review the premous of the story is simple, two totally different comics teach each other about comedy, but you also have the sub plots of stolen eggs, dead frenchmen and a search for eternal youth. ...
...unlikely place of Blackpool and done so with great effect. I can't think of anywhere else it could be based. The acting is wonderful but they all seem a little eclipsed by Evans who's character seems to shine through. I imagine he was given free reign in some scenes as the other actors seem surprised at some things he does and don't seem to know how to react. Advantages: Lovely idea, heart warming and funny.
Disadvantages: A little bit typical.
