Being Santa

Advantages: Entertaining for adults and children
Disadvantages: Silly...but what do you expect?

...reluctant to join in with the Christmas spirit. Then on Christmas Eve he accidentally kills Santa by knocking him off the roof, and, by wearing Santa's clothes, immediately enters into a contract to replace him. But after an evening of delivering presents with Charlie, Scott puts it all down to a dream...until the next year when he suddenly puts on weight and begins to resemble Santa Claus. Will he accept that he is now Santa Claus and the responsiblities ...
...far from the type of film I would usually watch - I like horrors and thrillers - there is something about the run up to Christmas that makes me want to watch something frivolous and light-hearted. And Tim Allen really is great as Scott/Santa. Although he is not as wonderfully sarcastic as he is in Home Improvement, for example, he does bring some gentle humour to the role, and somehow manages to make the role seem convincing - provided you're willing ...

Santa's Clauses

Advantages: Full Of Christmassy Fun For Kids
Disadvantages: Not As Good As The First Film

I have seen this and the original Santa Claus Film many many times (my 4 yr old being a huge fan of both <sigh>) I admit to enjoying "The Santa Clause" and was secretly harbouring a touch of excitement for the release of "The Santa Clause 2" Story We pick up again 8 years later where Santa (Tim Allen) has been happily delivering toys and playing tinsel football with the elves, unknown to him, his life is about to become rather difficult as Judy ...
...Charlie has got himself on the naughty list, and Curtis & Bernard have found that a second claus on the Santa Claus card has been overlooked, which means Santa has only 28 days to find and marry a "Mrs Clause" It is also the annual meeting of the legendary figures (santa / easter bunny / sandman / tooth fairy / mother nature / father time). Unfortunately the de-santafication process has already begun and Santa is starting to revert into Scott Calvin. ...

Definitely UPlifting

Advantages: More Pixar magic that doesn't disappoint
Disadvantages: Elements of realism detract from the escapist atmosphere

...be honest the trailers for up and coming 3D films had far more memorable in-your-face 3D effects than “Up” did (eg. a snowflake appearing to float in front of the screen). In keeping with the Pixar tradition, there is a short film before “Up” called “Partly Cloudy” showing the relationship between a long-suffering, loyal stork and his oddball cloud companion. Without wanting to spoil “Up” the basic plotline involves a chance meeting between grouchy ...
...along with him. They end up landing in South America and experience humorous encounters there with talking dogs and an emu-like bird. Carl (voiced by Edward Asner) has a hilariously over the top, square face with matching square glasses designed to reflect his closed personality. His irritation at Russell’s youthful exuberance is captured well with several comical one-liners. Yet we do feel sympathy for Carl when we find out what he has gone through ...

Home Alone with burglars at the door? Oh noes!!!

Advantages: Funny, heart melting, appealing to young kids as well as adults
Disadvantages: Some scenes may frighten children

...get into the spirit! Home Alone to me is one of the most magic christmas movies ever made, it's emotional, humorous, well acted and most importantly Christmassy. The story involves young Kevin McAllister (Macaulay Culkin) as he finds out what it's like to make his family 'disappear', along the way he is trouled by obstacles such as his basement fire and burglars, aptly called "the Wet Bandits" The music of the film is perhaps my favourite score of ...
...to a guy who first saw this movie when he was 3 years old. The ending scene when Kevin is reunited with his family is sure to bring a lump to the throat for even the hardest cage fighter. If you haven't seen this movie yet, what are you waiting for!? Christmas time has come, it's time to watch a movie about a kid who hates burglars! ...

A Charming Yarn

Advantages: Enjoyable gentle comedy
Disadvantages: Weak script

New in Town is a film starring Renee Zelwegger as a corporate honcho who heads to a small Minnesota town to gradually shut down their main income, a foodstuff factory, which while insignificant to the company which has newly aquired it, is of vital importance to the local community's survival. . I am surprised to say I enjoyed this film. It received pretty mixed to dire reviews but I still couldn't help but rent it – Renee Zelwegger is always good ...
...was diabolical in that. And Harry Connick Jr., well I admit I loved his retro Sinatra act long before the Bubles and Cullem's of the world tried to ape it so poorly. Harry is dreamy! And he is a pretty good actor to boot. Is this film formulaic? You betcha, as Sarah Palin would say. It does however have a few unique charms which elevated it for me beyond the insufferable dirge of a Matthew McConaghy or the girl from Grey's Anatomy chick flicks of ...
