Will and Viola - a bard's love story
Review of Shakespeare In Love DVD by markd_uk

Advantages: Excellent Cast, Amusing
Disadvantages: Slightly Weak Plot, Slow To Get Going

...that explores the notion that Shakespeare wasn't that great a writer and was, in fact, simply a lusty man ever in search of a muse - or, in other words, a woman to lay that might, if he's lucky, give him some inspiration for a new play. I kind of like his style, actually. Trying to write "Romeo and Ethel, the Pirate's Daughter," Shakespeare - played by Joseph Fiennes - discovers he's suffering from writer's block, a phenomenon known to many of us ...
...appease both her desire for Shakespeare and the stage itself, Viola takes to the boards as a young boy and plays the part of Romeo in Will's new play. Shakespeare himself discovers quickly that this new muse has, indeed, unlocked his writer's block and he starts to write his new play, helped by the input of his financially depressed theatre owner, Hugh Fennyman (played by Tom Wilkinson) and his lead actor, Ned Alleyn, who ultimately suggests a new ... Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind
Review of Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind DVD by nicmrkhm

Advantages: excellent performances, unique story
Disadvantages: complex narrative which can be confusing

I saw this film at the cinema and didn't really understand it at first but there was something about it that really made me want to see it again. I bought it a few years later on DVD and watched it straight away I understood it and loved it because i related with the characters and the acting of Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet made it all the more easy to believe and relate to. I would fully recommend this film to someone who enjoys complex narratives. ...
...refreshing to see him in a film where he is serious and where he goes against his typecast as an eccentric comic actor. if you are like me you will find the story comforting if you have suffered a break up recently as the story is based around this and having the memory of the relationship completely erased. ... A Fish Called Wanda
Review of A Fish Called Wanda DVD by nikiwitch123

Advantages: Hilarious
Disadvantages: some may not like adult humour

...no doubt this film is a classic. It is a film that can be watched again and again and will still hold its comedy value. Whilst there are few special effects in this film, it adds to its appeal, as it simply does not need any. What you see is what you get, a side splitting film with actors projecting side splitting performances. Any film with John Cleese and Jamie Lee Curtis is bound to be a winner, as this one is ... Autumn In New York
Review of Hannah And Her Sisters DVD by arthurpringle

Advantages: An ambitious and classy addition to Woody Allen's CV
Disadvantages: You might dislike Woody Allen!

Hannah and Her Sisters is one of the most ambitious films in the long career of director Woody Allen. It was first released in 1986 and has the longest running time of any Allen picture. The film interweaves between the lives and relationships of several characters in a large upscale New York family and features an amazing ensemble cast. Central to this of course are the seemingly perfect Hannah (played by Mia Farrow) and her two sisters Holly (Dianne ...
...Alexander' (Like Fanny and Alexander, Hannah and Her Sisters begins and ends with a festive family gathering) Hannah and Her Sisters is not Woody in his ultra serious mode. If the 'early funny ones' (Sleeper, Bananas, Take the Money and Run) constitute 'comedy Woody' and the likes of Interiors, Another Woman and September 'serious Woody' then Hannah and Her Sisters is a return to the 'inbetween Woody', a film with serious themes and dramatic elements ...
