Will and Viola - a bard's love story
Review of Shakespeare In Love DVD by markd_uk

Advantages: Excellent Cast, Amusing
Disadvantages: Slightly Weak Plot, Slow To Get Going

...that explores the notion that Shakespeare wasn't that great a writer and was, in fact, simply a lusty man ever in search of a muse - or, in other words, a woman to lay that might, if he's lucky, give him some inspiration for a new play. I kind of like his style, actually. Trying to write "Romeo and Ethel, the Pirate's Daughter," Shakespeare - played by Joseph Fiennes - discovers he's suffering from writer's block, a phenomenon known to many of us ...
...appease both her desire for Shakespeare and the stage itself, Viola takes to the boards as a young boy and plays the part of Romeo in Will's new play. Shakespeare himself discovers quickly that this new muse has, indeed, unlocked his writer's block and he starts to write his new play, helped by the input of his financially depressed theatre owner, Hugh Fennyman (played by Tom Wilkinson) and his lead actor, Ned Alleyn, who ultimately suggests a new ... Four Weddings And A Funeral
Review of Four Weddings And A Funeral (Wide Screen) by shelley1986

Advantages: Brilliant characters and storyline.
Disadvantages: Disappointing special features.

This film was released in 1994 and is a romantic comedy/drama starring the hugely popular Hugh Grant, and American actress; Andie MacDowell. The story follows the life of Charles (Grant) and his colourful, upper class British friends. Wondering if he will ever find the right woman, Charles finally thinks he has in Carrie (MacDowell) at a wedding he and his friends attend. Just when things seem to be going rather swimmingly, Carrie reveals to Charles ...
...a relationship with him. Unfortunately, Carrie seems to become a regular guest within the same circles as poor Charles. The viewer sees the group of friends attend to these lavish weddings, each leading to another with regards to what happened during the previous one, and we also then experience the tragedy of losing one of the friends to a heart attack. The colourful characters are brilliant in this film. From the reserved and secret admirer of ... Read review

"Don't worry. We can walk to the curb from here."
Review of Annie Hall DVD by arthurpringle

Advantages: A funny and enjoyable experience
Disadvantages: Erm...you might not like Woody Allen

Annie Hall was the 'breakout' film for Woody Allen as a director. The film won four Academy awards including best picture/director and saw Allen move away from the freewheeling comedy films he was best known for at the time. Annie Hall is essentially about the relationship between Alvy Singer (Allen), a typically neurotic Allen character, in this case a comedian, and aspiring singer Annie Hall, played by Diane keaton in an Oscar winning performance. ...
...between Alvy and Annie's family. Annie Hall begins with Allen speaking straight to the camera as Alvy. The scene is an immediate indication that Allen has moved on and is seeking to make a different type of picture with more ambition. Alvy's very Woody Allen concerns give us an insight into his character and make an arresting beginning; "There's an old joke - um... two elderly women are at a Catskill mountain resort, and one of 'em says, "Boy, the ... ...so now here's the 'plot'...... Love Actually explores the ups and downs of relationships in the weeks building up to Christmas. Boyfriends and Girlfriends, Husbands and Wifes, Fathers and sons and rock stars and their managers all combine to make Love actually not just one story but ten very different ones. I really recommend that if you have not seen this movie, to go out and buy or rent it.......it's definately worth it! ... Read review

Shakespeare in Love
Review of Shakespeare In Love DVD by froggyandgiraffe

Advantages: Great story, great performances
Disadvantages: none!

...comedy with a bit of Shakespeare thrown in for good measure! The story is set around the writing of the Shakespeare's play, Romeo and Juliet. It uses genuinely laugh out loud moments and also moments that will bring a tear to your eye to tell the story of how young Will meets Viola and makes her his muse for the famous play. The cast is filled with stars and the sets, costumes and music are outstanding. You don't have to be a lover of Shakespeare ... Read review
