Vegas Baby.
Review of Swingers (Special Edition) by zero1010

Advantages: Perfect reflection of nineties pop culture
Disadvantages: I dont know its one of my favorite moves.

...who specializes in magicians. Swingers tells the story of Mike trying to get over his girlfriend with the help (usually) of his friends set against the backdrop of the swing scene in nineties L.A. Swingers is money and succeeds on many different levels. As a comedy it keeps you on your toes shooting out rapid fire one - liners delivered with dead eye accuracy by the fantastic cast. The script (written by star John Favreau) is tight, packed full ...
...for me is the style. Swingers looks good. Mike, Trent, Sue and Rob look good as they cruise their way through the club scene from Vegas to the Dresden. They ooze cool not seen since Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin ripped up Vegas in the early sixties. If you see this DVD then I am sure you will be running out to buy the soundtrack which I also recommend. The soundtrack is outstanding and mixes classic swing of Loius Jordan and George Jones, With the ... Read review

All aboard!
Review of On The Buses - Series 1 DVD by sunmeilan

Advantages: Light, fun entertainment
Disadvantages: Sexist, racist, old-fashioned

Introduction On the Buses was televised from 1969 to 1973 - hard to believe that it's now as old as me! I can't say I can remember it when it was first shown, but remember seeing replays as a child and my mum's always telling me about cosy evenings in by the fire watching it. It is thoroughly politically incorrect, but whatever this says about the period, On the Buses was one of the most successful comedy series ever made and 74 episodes were made ...
...main actors as cartoon characters on the front. The actors/characters The sitcom revolves around Stan Butler, played by Reg Varney, and his family. Stan is a bus driver who struggles to make a living to support himself and his mother. In his late 30s/early 40s, he still lives at home and has never had a steady girlfriend. His life is thwarted at every turn by Inspector Blake, who keeps a close eye on Stan and his shenanigans. Stan's friend, Jack, ... Read review

DOUBLE JEN AND TONIC
Review of The Break-Up/Along Came Polly DVD by imogen49

Advantages: For her fans two Jennifer Aniston films, unusual premises
Disadvantages: Preposterous stories that don't hold interest throughout

My partner loves the long running (and forever running in repeats) television series Friends. Jennifer Aniston played Rachel, who was one of my partner’s six favourite characters in the show. Several of those actors have moved on to films with variable success with Jennifer seemingly the most prolific. So when my partner spotted this Jennifer double bill in a two disc DVD format for the bargain price of £5, it was immediately purchased. Having not ...
...able to distance herself from the ultra familiar Rachel persona. BREAK UP At the start of this DVD, you are given the choice of “His” or “Hers”, implying you can view two different versions. However, there did not appear to be any difference in the subsequent story whichever choice you make to view. It would have been nice to see the film portrayed from a point of view of each the participants but that would be too much to hope for. Also, it would ... Read review

The suburban pleasures of Purley
Review of Terry And June - Series 1 DVD by sunmeilan

Advantages: Reasonable retro comedy
Disadvantages: I prefer George and Mildred. Yes, really.

Terry and June Medford are a middle-aged couple whose daughter has left home. Now that Terry has been promoted, they move to Purley and settle down to a comfortable suburban existence. But with Terry and his hare-brained schemes, life is never quiet for long. And with neighbours like Tina and Brian, there isn't much hope of him staying out of trouble. Thankfully, June is a loyal wife and puts up with much of Terry's madness because she loves him. ...
...another go. At the time, Terry and June became synonymous with the happily married surburban lifestyle that everyone was supposedly aiming for, although in hindsight, it is sometimes a little bit hard to take - worrying about the carpet when others are struggling to survive does seem like a problem taken too far. However, I think it is important to try to remember that it isn't supposed to be insulting - it is just a reflection of society at the ... Read review

September Song
Review of Radio Days DVD by arthurpringle

Advantages: Warm and nostalgic
Disadvantages: Nothing major

Radio Days is a film directed and written by Woody Allen in 1987. Allen does not appear in the film but he does feature as a narrator. Radio Days is inspired by Allen's childhood in the forties and is a nostalgic and bittersweet comedy about an era when radio was the most influential and popular medium and everyone gathered around their sets at night to listen to serials and comedy shows. The film has two broad strands that tie it together. The frst ...
...Allen has said that Radio Days is an exaggerated view of his childhood with many autobiographical traces. He did live by the beach (Long Beach) for a time and characters in the film were inspired by some of the relations he grew up with. He wanted to pick out a group of old songs that each evoked a memory and make a film about how important and glamorous radio seemed when he was a child. In Radio Days we meet little Joe's eccentric but warm family ... Read review
