Review of Police Academy DVD by
Charles_Strickland
Advantages: Somewhat funny
Disadvantages: Deplorable from start to finish
Hugh Wilson's POLICE ACADEMY was released in 1984, an auspicious debut that would spawn six self-glorified money-making sequels, one every year for the next six years and two television series spin-offs. Although film critics hate anything to do with this long-running franchise there is an army of fans somewhere who made this first film one of the biggest hits of the eighties, the lingering question, therefore, being whether the film that started ... ...the requirements for entering the police academy, the unrestrictive result being every unemployed bum and loser ends up training to become a police officer. A criminal is even given the choice to join the force as an alternative to going to jail. So join he gladly does, with a wild assortment of others, including a huge mountain of a man, a gentle giant called Hightower, a gun-hoe maniac, a kook who can imitate any sound and a squeaky-voiced woman ...

Superb Supernatural Collection!
Review of Ghostbusters / Ghostbusters 2 (Special Edition) by
Rhynoone
Advantages: Two great films packed with extras and digitally remastered.
Disadvantages: None!
Ghostbusters is a classic movie with a huge fanbase. Although initially released in 1984, the movie still holds its own today.
A very entertaining film indeed! Funny and heart warming are also words that spring to mind! It follows the story of three professors /scientists; Peter Venkman (Bill Murray - Lost in Translation, Groundhog Day), Ray Stantz (Dan Aykroyd - Blues Brothers, Dragnet) and Egon Spengler (Harold Ramis - Orange County, Knocked Up). ... ...both the movies and Real Ghostbusters cartoons. The coming of an ancient god sees a surge in the supernatural and the guys soon need to hire some additional help in the form of Winston Zeddemore (Ernie Hudson - Oz, Desperate Housewives). When ancient god Gozer threatens to destro the city, the Gostbusters must spring into action and save the day! Along the way they must help out the object of Peter's affection, Dana Barret (Sigourney Weaver - Alien, ...

A bittersweet gem
Review of Broadway Danny Rose (Wide Screen) by
arthurpringle
Advantages: Beautifully shot, great performances
Disadvantages: None that spring to mind
...unsuccesful. Welcome to the bittersweet Broadway Danny Rose, one of Woody Allen's lesser known gems.
Shot in black and white, Broadway Danny Rose has a beautiful framing device. A group of comedians meet in a New York restaurant and begin swapping stories and jokes. One of them mentions Danny Rose and they laugh and begin to talk about him in the past tense. Danny's threadbare career as an agent and constant struggles appear to have made him a slightly ... ...the melancholic, bittersweet atmosphere of Broadway Danny Rose is distilled in one beautiful shot. Equally touching is the moment when Danny learns that Lou is going to leave him. All his work and enthusiasm has counted for nothing. There are bigger fish in showbusiness than Danny Rose and there is nothing he can do about it. At the end we see Danny in his small apartment at thanksgiving. His clients, including the recovering Barney, are there and ...
