Saddle Up!
Advantages: Great fun to watch Disadvantages: A bit too obscure at times
Blazing Saddles was first released in 1974 and directed by Mel Brooks. I saw this film a good few years ago and loved it the moment I saw it. It isn't a typical cowboy movie like you first expect when it begins and truly is a pleasure to watch. For this reason, this DVD was another one that I asked for at Christmas time and another that I am thankful to have received. Blazing Saddles tells the seemingly simple story of how a railroad is bound to ... ...and tough gang all gun's blazing but first you appoint the town with a new sheriff - one that you figure will last 24 hours at the most and that's when Rock Ridge becomes the first town to receive a black sheriff. Despite the somewhat simple nature of the plot, as with all Mel Brook's films nothing it quite what it seems and this plot ultimately becomes just the pretext for a series of lunatic events that through logic right out of the window and ...

Funny Frankenstein!
Advantages: Funny Disadvantages: None really
Young Frankenstein is a comedy horror movie directed by Mel Brooks and is based on the famous novel Frankenstein written by Mary Shelley. The film was released in 1974 and I saw it recently on my Sky box and decided to watch it. It is about a neurosurgeon Frederick played by Gene Wilder has inherited his grandfather`s castle, his grandfather is the famous Dr Victor Frankenstein who tried to reanimate dead bodies he goes to see the castle. Frederick ... ...is not scary at all! Young Frankenstein is quite a short film at only 106 minutes and the time just flew by! I would recommend this film to anyone as it is very funny and for that reason I rate it 5/5. This review is for the film only as I saw it on Sky so don`t know what special features it has. This review may be found on other sites under the names mariofan123 and ns1209. 5/5 Recommended watch as it was very funny !!!! ...

I laugh every time I watch it!
Advantages: One of the best comedy series made Disadvantages: None
...watching the first series of Porridge on DVD and, as usual, laughing out loud at it again.
Dave bought me all three series and the Christmas specials a couple of years ago and they regularly come out when I fancy a good laugh.
The current price of the DVDs on the HMV site is £6.99 for each series and a separate DVD of the Christmas Specials or they are available as a set of four DVDs for £16.99.
Porridge was written by Dick Clement and Ian Le ... ...as Godber. They are kept on their toes by the two main prison officers (known as screws); the strict Mr Mackay played by Fulton Mackay and the kinder Mr Barraclough played by Brian Wilde.
Unusually there is no theme tune at the beginning of the show; instead each episode opens with the following spoken words:
"Norman Stanley Fletcher, you have pleaded guilty to the charges brought by this court, and it is now my duty to pass sentence. You are an ...

Could both shifts please report to O.R.
Advantages: A fantastic portrayal of the lives, laughs and troubles of M*A*S*H personnel Disadvantages: I can't find any at all!!
M*A*S*H (Mobile Army Surgical hospital) was a television series that ran for eleven seasons between 1973 and 1983. The series was set in the Korean War and based around the oddball characters that served in the 4077th MASH. The series itself fits into the category of black comedy set in the Korean War. It is probably the best place here to mention that this series does not insinuate ever that war or the situations is causes is a funny thing or that ... ...simply highlights how in the toughest of situations it is often the humour of those that remain that prevails the longest. Sort of along the 'they can crush us but they'll never crush our spirit' lines. Therefore the series does not shy from making some statements about war even if they are made in a comedic way but is careful to place just the right amount of emphasis on sensitive issues without becoming bogged down with them. None of the episodes ...

Dark Star
Advantages: Funny, original, menacing - cult classic Disadvantages: Low on plot, short and obviously made on a budget
...some point in the future DARK STAR has embarked on a mission to wipe out "unstable planets". The spacemen have been on board for twenty years and each has gone a little mad through sheer and utter boredom. The film is full of hippyish and subversive humour, and is hilariously off the wall.
Perhaps the most sympathetic character is the rather precious Sgt Pinback. Having captured an alien that is effectively a beach ball with little clawed feet, ... ...serious attitude problem. Dark Star works at many levels - as a human comedy, as a bleak drama, as a menacing thriller and as a satire on the military and the ultimate madness and illogicality of most organisations and rational systems. Short but very memorable.
Carpenter went on to write and direct many famous films in the horror genre from Halloween and the Fog to LA Gothic. If you like 'Silent Running', or 'Dr Strangelove' then you will probably ...
