Review of Steptoe And Son - The Very Best Of Steptoe And Son - Vol. 2 DVD by
sunmeilan
Advantages: Some classic episodes
Disadvantages: Four of the five episodes are from 1974
...through to the early seventies. Steptoe and Son is apparently one of the few series for which all the episodes are available for viewing today – many contemporary sitcoms have lost a few episodes along the way. Five well-known episodes have been selected for this particular DVD – one from 1963 and four from 1974. The fact that they are not played in sequence is of no importance; unlike some sitcoms, each episode is a standalone story. This series ... ...8 series consisting of 57 Steptoe and Son episodes in all, and to be honest, all that I have seen could be classed as classics. However, it is not really a major concern – it just seems rather odd. Also, why just 5 episodes? The more the better as far as I am concerned. I’d be interested to know why these particular episodes were chosen – was it viewing figures? Or just somebody’s whim? I suppose another criticism is that, having bought this DVD, ...

Wisdom is slightly lacking
Review of On The Beat / Man Of The Moment DVD by
Maximus-Qualitus
Advantages: Funny in parts
Disadvantages: Not as funny in some parts
Norman wisdom - On the Beat and Man of The Moment.
*****************************************************************
On the Beat (1962)
*********************
Norman is sick of being a parking attendant and dreams of following in his fathers footprints and become a police man. Unfortunately he fails the height test, not that that would be a problem today.
Dejected he starts going through his dad's old chest and guess what he finds? His fathers ... ...daft romp. The slapstick is on par with his other films but the gags are a bit thin on the ground. He was underestimated as a multi faceted actor and here he plays two characters very well.
The chase scene where hundreds of coppers are chasing him is superb.
No Mr Grimsdale on this outing.
RUNTIME: 106 min Man of the Moment (1955)
******************************
Norman is a minor civil servant, who through the usual mishap becomes a favourite ...

The Love Guru
Review of The Love Guru DVD by
ameriemcatamney
Advantages: Funny
Disadvantages: Bit cheesy
The movie stars Mike Myers and deals with the story of a "Hindu" love guru tasked to save the marriage of a Toronto Mapleleafs hockey player before it eventually ruins the team's chances of winning the Stanley Cup. Yes, that's the synopsis of the movie. If you think it sounds shallow and unfunny, well you've hit the nail right on the head.
People who were expecting the kind of gross but ultimately super-funny gags and sequences in Myers' Austin ...

Just Like Heaven
Review of Just Like Heaven DVD by
ameriemcatamney
Advantages: Good acting
Disadvantages: N/A
Big forehead Reese Witherspoon plays (implausibly) a workaholic doctor who seems to retain her Barbie-like prettiness despite working without sleep. She can't get a date (again, yeah right) and is on her way to visit someone when she gets smacked by a car. Fast forward to sometime later and we meet Mark Ruffalo, who happens to be the new tenant in Witherspoon's apartment. He starts seeing the unknowing ghost of Witherspoon and thus the saccharine-sweet, ...

Just Friends
Review of Just Friends DVD by
ameriemcatamney
Advantages: Reynolds
Disadvantages: N/A
Just Friends came out in December of 2005 and just barely flew under the radar. It is quite a shame, considering that this movie, more than any other, demonstrates the talent that Ryan Reynolds has at doing what he does best: being a complete jerk. Reynolds has always done his best when in the role of a smug, cocky, and crassly witty anti-hero and this time is no different. Chris Brander (Reynolds) was the fattest kid in high school whose best friend ...
