Cruising into Colour - and still funny!!
Advantages: Carry on in Colour, finally!! Disadvantages: Similar to the first five
...first major watershed in the Carry on series. Last one written by Norman Hudis, the introduction of some new, familiar faces, and the brand spanking effects of colour!
First Impression
------------------------
The ultimate low budget film series shelling out on a cruise? Don't bet on it! The producers do credit P&O with their help in the film, but the fact most of the on board deck scenes are around the same area (Swimming pool and walkways around) ... ...What ensues is memorable Carry On physical comedy!
Memories
--------------
All those outlined above plus the scene in the bar where Dilys Laye and Liz Fraser join the regular drunk (Ronnie Stevens) and the barman and try most of the drinks in a matter of minutes!!
Also Kenneth Conner singing a ballad where his mind wanders(!) and he ends up serenading... well, I don't want to spoil it!
Conclusion
-----------------
An entertaining entry into ...

'Arold! 'Arold!
Advantages: Some classic episodes Disadvantages: Four of the five episodes are from 1974
...through to the early seventies. Steptoe and Son is apparently one of the few series for which all the episodes are available for viewing today – many contemporary sitcoms have lost a few episodes along the way. Five well-known episodes have been selected for this particular DVD – one from 1963 and four from 1974. The fact that they are not played in sequence is of no importance; unlike some sitcoms, each episode is a standalone story. This series ... ...8 series consisting of 57 Steptoe and Son episodes in all, and to be honest, all that I have seen could be classed as classics. However, it is not really a major concern – it just seems rather odd. Also, why just 5 episodes? The more the better as far as I am concerned. I’d be interested to know why these particular episodes were chosen – was it viewing figures? Or just somebody’s whim? I suppose another criticism is that, having bought this DVD, ...

Wisdom is slightly lacking
Advantages: Funny in parts Disadvantages: Not as funny in some parts
Norman wisdom - On the Beat and Man of The Moment.
*****************************************************************
On the Beat (1962)
*********************
Norman is sick of being a parking attendant and dreams of following in his fathers footprints and become a police man. Unfortunately he fails the height test, not that that would be a problem today.
Dejected he starts going through his dad's old chest and guess what he finds? His fathers ... ...daft romp. The slapstick is on par with his other films but the gags are a bit thin on the ground. He was underestimated as a multi faceted actor and here he plays two characters very well.
The chase scene where hundreds of coppers are chasing him is superb.
No Mr Grimsdale on this outing.
RUNTIME: 106 min Man of the Moment (1955)
******************************
Norman is a minor civil servant, who through the usual mishap becomes a favourite ...

The Very Best Of... ?
Advantages: Timeless script and quality acting. A classic. Disadvantages: Will you consider the 5 episodes to be the Very Best?
...episode featuring the otherwise unseen Steptoe clan as they attend a family funeral. Lots of great lines and its refreshing to see a change of location. The Desperate Hours -
Very poignant and funny episode highlighting the basic hand to mouth existance of the Steptoe's in bleak times contrasting with the relative luxuries of the prisoners in the nearby prison. A pair of escaped convicts seek help from the Steptoes but in the Steptoe household food ... ...lot has changed in the Steptoe household. A fashion photographer wants to do a 1920's fashion shoot in the Steptoe yard. Not one of the great episodes -the cliches are beginning to set in and Harold's plight made less credible as he bumbles along in direct opposition to his increasingly money grabbing father.
The character traits of the Steptoes were to become more outlandish as the series pogressed with varying results - alternating between hilarious ...

The wedding of the year 'My Big Fat Greek Wedding'
Advantages: Fun, nice story Disadvantages: Predictable
I first watched My Big Fat Greek Wedding a few years ago and although it hasn't become one of my favourite films, I do still watch it from time to time. The film first came out in 2002 so has been around for quite a while now. The story of the film is based around a character called Toula Portokalos (Christina Eleusiniotis). Toula is from a greek family, who take the traditions of their culture very seriously. Her family own a resteraunt called 'Dancing ... ...her thirties and yet has never really done anything with her life. She is plain and no-one really notices her as she goes around her everyday life. One day Toula decides to do something about her life and signs up to a college course. It isn't easy for her to persuade her Father Gus (Michael Constantine), but her Mother Maria (Lainie Kazan) manages to help her. Once she has started the course she starts to feel more confident in herself and decides ...
