The First Of A Classic Series :-)

Advantages: well made, good cast, the start of something big :-)
Disadvantages: not hilariously funny, quite different to the Carry Ons of the 1970s

Carry On Sergeant was made in 1958 & was the first in a long line of the Carry On films, one of the most phenomenally successful series in the history of British comedy. Carry On Sergeant had some of what would become the core cast - Kenneth Connor, Kenneth Williams, Hattie Jaques, Charles Hawtrey - but the days of Sid James & Barbara Windsor were still to come. Headlining Carry On Sergeant was William Hartnell, later famous as the first actor to ...
...plays a convincingly austere sergeant in the title role of this film, as the main cast try to pull themselves up from being the worst section of the Army to the best. This is a good film, entertaining & well made, but lacks the uproariously funny gags & stereotypes of the later films. You won't find quick flashes of bare breasts in this one, nor will you be rolling on the floor with laughter - but it is worth watching. ...

Carry on Nurse

Advantages: Still a funny film
Disadvantages: No plot to the film

Carry On Nurse is the second film to be released in the Carry On series and was released in 1959. The cast includes Shirley Eaton, Kenneth Connor, Charles Hawtrey, Hattie Jaques, Terence Longdon, Bill Owen, Leslie Philips, Joan Sims and Kenneth Williams. Hattie Jaques plays the infamous matron who does battle with anyone that gets in her way. She plays the roll with the utmost control and straightfaced authority. There is no real story line to the ...
...of innuendos. Having said that, the film although simple is very appealing and funny to watch. Charles Hawtrey spend a lot of the film giggling fom his bed whilst glued to his radio headphones. Kenneth Connor plays Bernie Bishop,a bumbling boxer with a broken hand. One memorable line of his when he is being taken into the ward is, "I'm not going in there, it's full of sick people!" Leslie Philips who plays Jack Bell, wafts through the film with ...

Mr Grimsdale !!!!!!

Advantages: One of his Best
Disadvantages: Nothing

The square peg. Norman: = Norman Wisdom was born in 1915. He had a difficult upbringing and spent some time in a childrens home. He served in the Merchant navy and took part in WW2 before becoming an actor in 1946 at the age of 31. He has never looked back. He has made 19 movies in total and appeared, at the last count, 16 times on TV. His career has spanned from his early beginnings in 1948 in the movie 'A Date with a Dream' ...
...He also starred in the longest running sitcom in TV history 'Last of the Summer Wine'. Filmed when Norman was an established star and it shows he is wonderfully comfortable as the hapless Norman Pitkin. The Film: = One of his funniest films although it does employ a tactic he was to use in three other of his movies. We find Norman as his alter ego Pitkin, along side “Mr Grimsdale”, (Edward Chapman). They are workmen sent to repair the ...

The wedding of the year 'My Big Fat Greek Wedding'

Advantages: Fun, nice story
Disadvantages: Predictable

I first watched My Big Fat Greek Wedding a few years ago and although it hasn't become one of my favourite films, I do still watch it from time to time. The film first came out in 2002 so has been around for quite a while now. The story of the film is based around a character called Toula Portokalos (Christina Eleusiniotis). Toula is from a greek family, who take the traditions of their culture very seriously. Her family own a resteraunt called 'Dancing ...
...her thirties and yet has never really done anything with her life. She is plain and no-one really notices her as she goes around her everyday life. One day Toula decides to do something about her life and signs up to a college course. It isn't easy for her to persuade her Father Gus (Michael Constantine), but her Mother Maria (Lainie Kazan) manages to help her. Once she has started the course she starts to feel more confident in herself and decides ...

Offender of the Universe

Advantages: sick slick rapid succession of one line jokes
Disadvantages: turns the air blue, plenty of bad language, not for the easily offended

Jimmy Carr is the Marmite of Comedy, you either love him or hate him, there’s not really much in between. On the UK comedy scene for the past 10 years, he has become more and more known over the past few years, in particular as host of comedy quiz ‘8 out of 10 cats’ and voice of many a Channel 4 ‘Top 100 shows’. Carr himself was voted number 12 in the ‘Top 100 Comedians’. Personally I love Jimmy Carr. Then again, I love a lot of the modern comedians, ...
...over the past decade. Jimmy Carr Telling Jokes is his latest DVD release. There are four previous releases of his stage show, all recorded at the Bloomsbury Theatre in London over time from 2005 until this year. One of Jimmy Carr’s previous DVDs opens with a warning: “This show is not for the easily offended, this is not even for those difficult to offend, this show is for people without moral compass.” Not only is this true for the DVD is was on, ...
