Eve vs the snake - no contest
Advantages: Very funny screwball comedy Disadvantages: None - watch it
...of card sharks who travel the ships around America fleecing other passengers. Rich kid Henry Fonda returning from a year in the Amazon studying snakes should be an easy target but Stanwyck falls in love with him instead. She then has to outplay her own father (Coburn) to stop him taking Fonda's money. It ends badly though when Fonda discovers their real indentities and decides she's been playing him for a fool the whole time. Heartbroken, Stanwyck ... ...The Lady Eve...
This romantic comedy has everything - false identities, fake twins, snakes and Henry Fonda performing a number of hilarious pratfalls. Barbara Stanwyck plays another streetwise girl in this movie and her method of capturing Fonda's attention on the boat after every other woman has tried and failed to pick him up is not to be missed.
Veteran comedy actors Charles Coburn and Eric Blore turn in wonderful comic performances as does ...

A forgotten classic
Advantages: Wonderful film Disadvantages: Absolutely no special features
...who have never heard of Pot O' Gold. I had never heard of it myself, until my father and I spotted it completely by chance in HMV in Nottingham over a year ago (we had actually gone into the city to look for a costume for me to dress up as Hamlet to go to a convention in Swindon, but that's a whole different story....). Being a huge fan of Jimmy Stewart, it surprised me that I was unfamiliar with this title, so I watched it as soon as we got home ... ...Gold is the story of James Hamilton Haskell (Stewart), a small-town music store owner who goes to the city to live with his uncle, C J Haskell (Charles Winneger), the owner of a health food business. James falls in love with Molly McCorkle (Paulette Goddard), whose family are involved in a feud with the Haskells. James tries to reconcile the two families while trying to give the band Molly sings with their big break on his uncle's radio show.

Watch out as Abbott and Costello take to the air.
Advantages: Good comedy routines, good singing and a reasonable storyline Disadvantages: Too much song and dance in it
...the best friend. Keep ‘Em Flying is another in a series of early Abbott & Costello movies that involved them in one of the services during wartime. In ‘Buck Privates’ they were soldiers, In ‘In The Navy’ they were sailors and here they are in the Air Corps. It was released in 1941 (the fourth film they had made in a ten month period) and is similar in style to all their early films in that it was much more of a variety show on film than an actual ... ...who look identical! Keep ‘Em Flying is a fun little movie, part music hall, part comedy and part propaganda it is a product of its time and manages to be entertaining in a number of different ways. It is interesting to watch to see because of it being a lost genre of movie. Nothing like this is ever made anymore. It is also intriguing because it is a different kind of propaganda movie. Not a serious one maybe but it does push forward the idea that ...

I'm winnin' dis fight and winnin' it fair, see?
Advantages: Fun entry in the East Side Kids series of juvenile delinquent hijinks films Disadvantages: Quaint and corny - but that's a good part of its charm
...Dead End Kids and the Bowery Boys - in the Dead End Kids incarnation, they were the boys featured in the James Cagney classic 'Angels with Dirty Faces'), a group of juvenile delinquents who hang out in the streets of old New York City. The boys, with their brash 1940s Noo Yawk attitudes and mischief-making are both endearing and smile-raising even now, and you really find yourself warming to these cute characters - maybe they're potential future ... ...have their warm and fuzzy side and a strong sense of honour, and you feel there is scope for eventual redemption for the Kids (but hopefully not so much so that they lose their charm and infectious zest along the way!) (Though, having said 'kids' - in common with most early films about teenagers, Leo Gorcey was 24 when this film was made, and Sammy Morrison nearly 30!) In this film, the leader of the Kids, Muggs (an aspiring boxer), is booked to ...

The wedding of the year 'My Big Fat Greek Wedding'
Advantages: Fun, nice story Disadvantages: Predictable
I first watched My Big Fat Greek Wedding a few years ago and although it hasn't become one of my favourite films, I do still watch it from time to time. The film first came out in 2002 so has been around for quite a while now. The story of the film is based around a character called Toula Portokalos (Christina Eleusiniotis). Toula is from a greek family, who take the traditions of their culture very seriously. Her family own a resteraunt called 'Dancing ... ...her thirties and yet has never really done anything with her life. She is plain and no-one really notices her as she goes around her everyday life. One day Toula decides to do something about her life and signs up to a college course. It isn't easy for her to persuade her Father Gus (Michael Constantine), but her Mother Maria (Lainie Kazan) manages to help her. Once she has started the course she starts to feel more confident in herself and decides ...
