Historic Treasures
Review of The Secret Policeman's Ball The Complete Edition (Box Set) by
paulrob
Advantages: The cream of British comedy, value for money,
Disadvantages: Poor sound and video quality
...in support for Amnesty International. The result was a resounding success, and five other shows were made between 1977 and 1989. In 1991 a special benifit was made to commemorate Amnesty International's 30th Anniversary. All seven of these shows are here over four DVDs.
John Clese seems to have done well in his circle of friends. Anyone who is anyone in British comedy at the time is here, including the Monty Python team, Rowan Atkinson, Stephen ... ...Miller, Barry Humphries, Eleanor Bron, the Goodies, Sir Peter Ustinov, Clive James, French and Saunders, and Kathy Burke.
Old favourite sketches are performed here, such as Monty Python's Lumberjack and Peter Cook's Interesting Facts. There are also lots of new sketches, and stand up comedy.
I particularly enjoyed the early Rowan Atkinson sketches. There are two using his mime skills, as well as his famous Headmaster sketch.
Stephen Fry and Hugh ...

Twisted with a great anti-hero!
Review of Erik The Viking (Special Edition) by
mamadee
Advantages: Some inspired comedy moments
Disadvantages: No consistency, and feels a little long in places
...which was a pity!
Erik the Viking (Tim Robbins) gathers warriors from his village and sets out on a dangerous journey to Valhalla, to ask the gods to end the Age of Ragnorok and allow his people to see sunlight again. Particularly noteworthy are Jones himself as a king who quite literally only sees what he wants to see and John Cleese who has a hilarious cameo as Halfdan the Black who runs a torture chamber in his spare time. Also watch out for ... ...for me. This film is a hilarious Pythonesque satire of Viking life.
Tim Robbins was fine in a cutesy, little boy way which is, I guess, what he was supposed to be. Cleese's role seemed uninspired with only brief moments of the genius we have come to expect. It was however a fun film particularly seeing Tim McInnerny pre-Blackadder-"Captain Darling" days and Antony Sher made an excellent "trickster" Loki.
Despite the negatives, it's certainly worth ...

The Black heart of a snake
Review of Blackadder - Complete Blackadder (Limited Edition Box Set) by
blissman70
Advantages: great classic humour and hours of entertainment
Disadvantages: none for Rowan Atkinson fans... all for the non fans
...* BRIEF IDEA
Edmund Blackadder is a character spanning many generations through out history, starting from the middle ages right through to 1917 during the Great War, with each series depicting his character as being a self centred chancer with a sharp mind, (apart from the first series where he does come across as being a little stupid?), with his life's status seeming to diminish as the next series opened, starting as the son of a king and ending ... ...the entire four series Edmund Blackadder always ended up with his side kick Baldrick, who happens to be a rather foolish and particularly clumsy sort of individual, although his heart is in the right place and he tends to serve Blackadder well in every era, although Blackadder does tend to use him as a sort of whipping boy.
The theme tune throughout the series tended to be the same but is played to suite the specific era in which the show is set… ...

Rewind or switch off?
Review of Be Kind Rewind DVD by
sunmeilan
Advantages: Mos Def was great, quirky plot
Disadvantages: Plot so quirky it doesn't really have a point
...feeling a bit puzzled to be honest. In case anyone was wondering about the title - it apparently refers to a plea by video store owners to customers to rewind VHS tapes to the beginning before returning. Jack Black is perfectly fine as Jerry. Jerry is wildly eccentric, and looks it, which seems to be the case with many of the roles Black takes on, so he is isn't exactly stretched. However, he works well within the confines of the film, and even made ... ...really felt there needed to be one here. It could be that the director, Michel Gondry, is trying to make a point about the film industry - that it has become so Hollywood-ized that people have forgotten expensive special effects aren't always necessary. It could also be a commentary about our high tech society, and how videos have been replaced by DVDs, and DVDs are now being replaced by more high-tech mediums. Or maybe it is about the community ...
