Will he ever leave?

Advantages: funny, great acting
Disadvantages: none

I watched Tanguy on DVD yesterday and I just loved it. It is definitely one of my favourite French movies. I am a huge fan of Etienne Chatillez and I just love all the films he made: La vie est un long fleuve tranquille, Tatie Danielle, Le bonheur est dans le pre (sorry I have put the French titles but I am not quite sure of the English titles). +++ The plot: Tanguy (Eric Berger) is 28 and still lives with his parents. If he is really happy with ...
...campaign, they meet a stonewall: Tanguy is a major specialist of traditional Chinese thought, and he faces everything with the self-control that a Chinese sage would envy. When Edith and Paul realise he doesn't want to move out they rent him a small studio but Tanguy start having panic attack and has to go to hospital. It gets so bad that he moves back in with his parents. His father gets really fed up with him and throws him out. Tanguy decides ...

A Hitchcockian Nightmare

Advantages: Superb performances, very atmospheric, tense
Disadvantages: No real empathy for main characters

...greeted by a fellow traveler, Harry, who claims they went to school together in 1979. Michel doesn't recognise Harry, but it's clear from the absolute clarity of Harry's reminiscences that they were indeed in the same year. Michel and his family are on their way to their dilapidated summer home for a well-earned rest, and Harry invites himself and his girlfriend, Plum, to go with them for a drink. They end up staying for dinner. Over dinner, Harry ...
...their judgement is spot on. Harry, He's Here to Help is an incredibly creepy and suspenseful film that builds its tension slowly and masterfully. We guess from the start that Harry is not quite 'all there', but as the horror slowly unfolds, we are genuinely shocked by the depth and complexity of his disturbed psyche and of the places the film eventually takes us to. Harry is a psychopath that could have been created by the master of suspense himself. ...

The Triplettes of Belleville

Advantages: Freeview
Disadvantages: Not in English much

My copy of Belleville Rendez - vous came free with a copy of the Times on Saturday. The cover of the DVD gave away the cartoon style that was about to follow. Written & directed by Sylvian Chomet for predominantly French audiences, it is also known by the name 'The Triplets of Bellville' for English speaking audiences. The film came in DVD format, rated PG parental guidance for children under 12 years old due probably to mild nudity & moderate violence ...

Camp 'murder mystery'/musical comedy

Advantages: funny, great soundtrack, beautifully filmed
Disadvantages: none!

...country house at Christmas, where 8 women in different stages of life have met for a festive reunion. The evening quickly twists around into something more sinister when the only man of the household is found murdered, and one of the women must be responsible. More than half of the film is made up of highly amusing exchanges between characters, punctuated by each actress singing a song that gives the audience a better idea of their character. Each ...
...Isabelle Huppert, as the bitter spinster Augustine. She brings equal humour and poignancy to what could have been a two dimensional character. I would definitely recommend this film, but be prepared - it certainly won't be what you expect. DVD extras: although there isn't a vast quanity of extras, what is there is very good quality. There are two music videos of songs featured in the film, including Catherine Deneuve singing, there is a very good ...

The wedding of the year 'My Big Fat Greek Wedding'

Advantages: Fun, nice story
Disadvantages: Predictable

I first watched My Big Fat Greek Wedding a few years ago and although it hasn't become one of my favourite films, I do still watch it from time to time. The film first came out in 2002 so has been around for quite a while now. The story of the film is based around a character called Toula Portokalos (Christina Eleusiniotis). Toula is from a greek family, who take the traditions of their culture very seriously. Her family own a resteraunt called 'Dancing ...
...her thirties and yet has never really done anything with her life. She is plain and no-one really notices her as she goes around her everyday life. One day Toula decides to do something about her life and signs up to a college course. It isn't easy for her to persuade her Father Gus (Michael Constantine), but her Mother Maria (Lainie Kazan) manages to help her. Once she has started the course she starts to feel more confident in herself and decides ...
