Advantages: Excellent acting, Beatiful cinematography. Disadvantages: Could be a bit too long for some people.
...ColdMountain is a truly wonderful movie, like a modern day Gone With The Wind, it blends a touching love story with the brutal backdrop of the American Civil War.
Jude Law plays the lead role of a man going through trials that would have broken Hercules, to get back to the love he left behind. His acting is understated with a nod to the great Clint Eastwood.
Nicole Kidman is equisitely beautiful in her role and the way her character adapts to hardship is marvelous alongside the quite mesmerising performance of Rene Zellwegger, which is both humurous and at times extremely touching.
The fabulous Ray Winstone also puts in a great turn as a suitably menacing bad guy.
This film is an epic western classic and has excellent cinematography and score to add to its meandering and often heart wrenching story....

Advantages: Very easy to relate to the emotions in the film, realistic battle scenes Disadvantages: Some people might find the story presentation annoying
...ColdMountain did everything for me that a great film should. It made me laugh, cry, every human emotion is there.
I loved the way that it presented the story through a series of letters, although I suppose some people might find this irritating after a while.
I won't spoil the ending for those who have never seen it, but get several boxes of tissues ready.
I suppose you could say it had more girl-appeal than bloke-appeal because it is a love-story and a sad one.
Even so he Civil War battle scenes are quite gory, and there are some other bloody bits too, but they do remind you what life was like when medical aid was not on the end of a phone and when people were so poor and hungry they would kill for food.
Some people will inevitably draw similarities with Gone with the Wind, but ColdMountain is much more real and much more...

DVD Description
Directed by Anthony Minghella (THE ENGLISH PATIENT), this Civil War saga addresses romance, friendship, and the ravages of war--both in the field and on the home front. Far more than a simple love story, Minghella's film captures the horrors of war for both those fighting it, and for those left behind. Based on the Charles Frazier novel, this is a tale of hope, longing, redemption, second chances, and faith. Ada Monroe (Nicole Kidman) is a proper lady who accompanies her preacher father (Donald Sutherland) to Cold Mountain, North Carolina. She waits for her love, W.P. Inman (Jude Law)--a sensitive man of few words--to return from war. In the process she learns basic survival skills and finds strength from no-nonsense Ruby (Renee Zellweger), a spitfire who can work the land as well as any man. Meanwhile, wounded Inman has had enough of war and killing, and is slowly working his way back to Ada despite the perils of being a Confederate deserter. Law and Kidman are genuinely touching as two virtual strangers who invest all of their faith in each other, and Zellweger is astounding as the uncultured but compassionate Ruby. Rounding out the cast is an impressive array of actors, including Brendan Gleeson, Ray Winstone, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Natalie Portman, Jack White (of the White Stripes), Kathy Baker, Giovanni Ribisi, and many others.

Advantages: Renee Zellweger is excellent as Ruby Disadvantages: Hollywoodised, unbelievable plot.
...Sorry to the other guys who have praised ColdMountain, but I'm going to give you the real picture (I've edited my original review, sorry ppl!!) . Yes, ColdMountain is an epic tale of love in the American Civil War. Yes, it stars Jude Law, Nicole Kidman, Renee Zellweger, and even a cameo from Jack White of the The White Stripes as deserter musician Georgia (This was what made me go and see the film). However, the plot is completely unbelievable. Jude Law, a builder, and Nicole Kidman, a posh pastors' daughter, decide that they fancy each other literally moments before he is whisked off to war. The cold and bloody war is hard on Law and the memories and photograph he has of Kidman are what keeps him going and determined to return home. How very sweet, but here's the thing. Years pass and while Law deserts the army he survives surely...
