The Storyline -----------------
Ken Carter, (Samuel L. Jackson), is a local business man in Richmond where he runs a shop selling sport equipment. He is given the opportunity to go back and coach his high school basketball team, the Richmond Oilers, a team with a lot of promise but a lot of attitude and selfishness to match it. He knows this is a huge job, as the lack of discipline amongst the players and the environment that they live in only works against making them the team he hopes they can be.
He accepts the job and in doing so he sets himself the challenge of making the team winners, but also in instilling an attitude of discipline and hope. He sets about the job by demanding the respect of the players and starting to instil in them a respect for themselves. As he strives to mould his team into disciplined winners, he battles against the environment that holds them back. The kids believe in the stereotypes of the neighbour hood they live in and don't believe that they can make anything of there lives, they have lost hope of making anything of their lives. His methods don't sit comfortably with the school or the families of the players. On one occasion he decides to cancel a game and lock up the gym because his players have not been attending class and reaching the required games. This brings huge unrest amongst the supporters and they lobby for Carter to be removed as Coach of the team.
Does he achieve his aims? Does he get sacked as Coach? Well you will have to watch the film to find out. What I will say is this is a very inspirational film which gives you hope that you can be more than what you see around you.
This film is based on a true story and the cancelled game, lead to a complete lockout at the gym. Carter's methods got a lot of coverage in America as he tried to instil his beliefs into the players that they didn't have to conform to there stereotype. Not only did his methods challenge the thinking of the team but it also challenged the thinking of the school and the families.
If you watch the credits at the end of the film you will read about what happened too many of the players after the season.
The Cast ------------
The main character in this film is Ken Carter (Samuel L. Jackson) but there are outstanding performances from all the cast as they grow from kids with attitude to men with goals. Although Samuel L. Jackson is the main focus, I can honestly say that there is not a single star of this film as all the performances are equally superb.

There is a feature on Coach Ken Carter, with interviews with the actual Ken Carter. He describes what life was like for him in Richmond when he was growing up and basically how he came to have the beliefs he has. This dotted with interviews with Samuel L. Jackson and some of the players from the team. This goes a long way to explain why he did what he did. It also explains why Damien Carter, Ken's son, with drew from a private school to go to Richmond and play for his father. This feature ends up with the 5th anniversary of the lockout with the original oilers coming back to play a game against the new oilers.
The next feature is called "Fast Break at Richmond High" which explains how the basketball scenes were choreographed and shot. What it does show is the challenge the crew had of realistically showing true emotion whilst keeping the scenes with basketball flowing. It also shows how the actors had to train to look effective as basketball players. What was amazing was the discipline instilled in the actors to look like basket players was very similar to the way Ken Carter instilled discipline. Another surprising fact was the use of a computerised story board to determine how the scene would be shot and where the best camera angle would come from.
Next there is a selection of 6 deleted scenes which go to explain the actions of Coach Carter further and also helps us relate to the players even more.
Finally there is a R&B music video called Hope, which features scenes from the film as well as ones which explain the characters in the film.
The Message & Christian View Point ------------------------------------------------
What is the message of this film? Firstly there is standing by your beliefs. Coach Carter stood by what he believed even if it meant he was disliked and would lose his job. If you believe in something that strongly, you should always stand proud, no matter how hard things get. Like the disciples in the bible, they stood up for what they believed in even when they were jailed and persecuted.
Secondly, you should treat others how you would want to be treated yourself. There is no one who can disagree with the fact that respect for each other is a good thing which leads to a better environment for everyone.
Finally, no matter what your situation, we should strive to make it better. We all have an opportunity to make something of our lives and more often that means accepting help from others. We shouldn't be forced to conform to what our surroundings say we should be but always have ambition.
Conclusion & Rating ^^^^^^^^^^^^^
This is one of the best films based on a real story that I have ever watched. This film inspires you to go out and make a difference in your life. The balance between the basketball and storyline is spot on giving you excellent doses of action without distracting from the story. All the performances of the cast are excellent and are instrumental into making this such a compelling film. The way the film has been shot only goes to enhance the story, giving moodiness as well as light just at the right moments. The sound track which is R&B also enhances the film as anything else would not fit into the environment of the story. I cannot emphasise enough how inspirational this film is, no matter how good or bad your situation is at the moment you will find something from this film which will make you think.
The special features on the film really help you understand what drove Coach Carter to do what he did and also add value to an already brilliant film
I would give this a rating of 10 out of 10 as it is in my eyes, either above or equals all other films which are based around a sport and depicts a true story. I really recommend that this is a film everyone should have in there collection.

The real life coach (Ken) Carter made the news in 1999 for closing the Gym and banning any basketball activities because several of the students in his team were not doing well in the classroom. The reason he took drastic action was because all the students on the team signed contracts that they would meet a minimum criteria which encompassed all of their education, not just the basketball side of it.

These parts of the film, although necessary are sometimes weakly done and it is these portions that make the film drag where we find ourselves ...

INTRODUCTION:
The film Coach Carter is based on a true story. In 1999, at Richmond High School (California, USA) the basketball coach (Ken Carter) closed the gymnasium and banned all basketball because several students in the team were not pulling their weight academically. Advantages: Moving and inspirational film Disadvantages: May be too long for some
plays the part of Ken Carter extremely well and he shows his emotions well on screen. The supporting actors which made up the team were also very good in their roles and I found it interesting that we also saw some of what was going on in their lives outside of school as this helped to add more depth to the whole story.
The whole idea of the film was good and even though it is true the way the film was made really did make it very believable and also show that there are still some people out their who do want to help the kids from deprived areas so they don't end up either dead, in gangs or even in jail.
My hubby even enjoyed the film even though he was not very keen non watching it.

DVD Description
In the tradition of LEAN ON ME and DANGEROUS MINDS comes COACH CARTER, an inspirational drama starring Samuel L. Jackson. Jackson portrays real-life figure Ken Carter, who graduated from California's Richmond High only to return there year later, in 1999, and take over as head coach of the boys' basketball team. Unfortunately, the troubled school he remembered as a teenager is an even more insufferable place in his adulthood. Determined to make a change in his players' lives, Carter makes each young man sign a contract that ensures he will maintain a 2.3 GPA, attend every class, and wear a jacket and tie on game day. Of course, the players reject the contract at first, but when they realize that they don't have any other choice, they give in. And when it appears that their tough-as-nails coach is actually turning them into winners on the court, they embrace their coach's philosophy even further. But when Coach Carter receives the incomprehensibly awful progress reports of his players, he does the unthinkable: he benches the entire team. Directed by Thomas Carter (SAVE THE LAST DANCE), COACH CARTER is a sensitive drama that features an impassioned performance by Jackson, as well as the impressive young cast (most notably Rob Brown, Rick Gonzalez, and Robert Ri'Chard).
