I once saw this film stocked in the foreign section of a Virgin megastore, but if the staff there had looked beyond the title they would have realised that there is nothing French about this film. It is set on one night in 1993 in a seedy London nightclub.
A whole host of characters interact at the club, from the bouncer to the innocent schoolboy to the off-his-face raver to some transvestites. The cast includes several names which will be familiar to fans of British TV shows including Monarch of the Glen, Coronation Street, and The Bill. The soundtrack is provided by Mr C, Brandon Block and Alex P themselves.
The script is very funny, and something i have found interesting while watching this film, which i have done several times, is that everyone i watch it with has laughed in different places. If all the people who have watched it were put in one room to watch it again, there would probably be constant laughter throughout.
This film is more suitable for some people than others. Those who are easily offended by strong language, drug use, and sex should steer clear. I am aware that some people for whom English is not their first language struggle to follow the film entirely, and unfortunately the DVD does not have subtitles.
However, 18 to 35-year-old audiences in particular will probably enjoy this film, especially those who may have been to similar clubs in the early 90s and enjoy the music from that time.
Although the film doesn't have subtitles, there are some interesting features and interviews on the disc.
Not many people have heard of this film, which isn't surprising given most independent British films' difficulties in finding the funds for a big marketing campaign, but the film seems to spread quickly via word of mouth, suggesting that although you probably don't know anything about it now, you may well enjoy it.
The small budget is also reflected in the lack of effects etc. but in a way this is in keeping with the dinginess of the club and helps you to feel like you're actually there.
It's only 80 minutes long so give it a chance and if you hate it then at least you won't have wasted much of your life.
