I really, really wanted to see this at the cinema, I remember the trailer's (well okay I don't remember the trailers that well, but I'm pretty sure I watched one somewhere), and I remember it being the layout on myspace and therefore I knew it was a film I MUST see. I also knew that it was released in the cinema at about the same time as "All the Boys Love Mandy Lane". Only for some reason I had some mixed up idea that this film was an 18, and I'm pretty sure that it did say it was an 18 on the posters in the cinemas. So I waited and waited for both this film and "All the Boys Love Mandy Lane" to come out on DVD then I planned on begging and begging my mom to buy the films so that I could actually watch them. Only there was a really big problem, which happened to be that this film went straight to the 3 for £20 offer (now 4 for £20). And unfortunately, "All the Boys Love Mandy Lane" didn't so I waited ages and ages for the other film! However coming back to what this review is about, I was extremely dumbfounded when I looked at the rating on this film, as I'd have always thought it was an 18 until I happened to pick it up at HMV and read the rating which happens to be a 15. I was really upset, in my mind, as I could have seen this at the cinema, and I haven't got anyone to blame but myself as I should have looked up the rating on the computer rather than presuming that it was an 18. But still, I really don't know where I got the idea from!
The director of this film is Matt Reeves. I have never ever heard of this person and according to IMDB, this is his first time, since 1996, he has endeavoured into becoming the director of a film! Now I have to admit, I am expecting to see more of this guy as the director of more and more films, however he has prompted that there is possible sequels to this film and therefore I reckon he is busy and has turned down some offers, though, I bet you that he will be the director of some new films pretty soon, as he is brilliant at being a director and this film just proves it!
There was very little amount of people in this film and that is why the cast list shown below is pretty short: Michael Stahl-David as Robert "Rob" Hawkins Mike
Vogel as Jason Hawkins T. J. Miller as Hudson "Hud" Platt Odette Yustman as Elizabeth "Beth" McIntyre Jessica Lucas as Lily Ford Lizzy Caplan as Marlena Diamond
Many people might already know that I tend to write actors/actress profiles here, though this time you could say you are prevented from the boringness of it all as many of these actors/actresses are not only brilliant at acting, but also do not appear in many films and many of you will probably not notice them unless on the rare occasion, so I'm presuming that you are possibly relieved that you don't have to read them but I really wouldn't know what to put. I shall say that they all showed how good they could act, and really made me and my mom feel like we were in the film, which I think the director and the writers wanted us to believe! And I'll explain later on, but I was so caught up in the film and you couldn't really judge whether they were acting brilliantly or not, as it is quite hard to do that when you feel as if you are actually in the film, the tension and the goose bumps you get, make you eager to watch it more and more!
This film is brilliant, the story line sounds weak, but the way in which it was written and directed makes it seem extremely strong. I could easily write the plot down on A6 piece of paper and probably only need half of that size, therefore you may not think much of the plot, however the plot isn't really the main focus, as you will understand a bit later on... Anyway the plot starts off slightly boring, as they are having a party, however something makes a loud noise outside like an explosion... they all start running as they know they are in incredible danger. Then they realise that they have to save someone who may die. But can they do just that without dying themselves?
Like I said just, the plot seems incredibly boring and you probably would not want to watch this if I just told you about the plot. However this is a review and therefore I am extremely glad to say that you are more interested in my thoughts. Well I have told you a hell of a lot already and as you can already guess, I totally enjoyed watching this film and wouldn't mind watching it over and over again. I shall say that my mom didn't particularly like this film due to the same reason I absolutely loved the film, which has probably got you thinking a lot more. I enjoyed how they included you in the film and how you felt as if you were running away from this dangerous thing as well. You felt as if you were part of the cast; however there was not "CUT" or "ACTION". You felt more like a character rather than an actor, and the way they did this was totally different. It was made in a way no film has ever dared to do. I think the style, in which they did it, depend upon who you are. It's basically a bit like Marmite, you'll either love it or you hate it. I loved the style and the way in which it was made, when it was completely opposite for my mom who hated the style and the way it was made.
I couldn't exactly choose a favourite character (unless myself, counts). The film was very fast moving and made you feel as if all the characters were your friends and therefore they needed no introduction, therefore you could not possibly pick a favourite character as you didn't know very much about them. Although, you still felt sorry for the people who disappears, like the one on the bridge who happens to want to stay with you but the crowd takes him away and you are forced to go in the opposite direction, you feel the whole deception of the film turn to sadness and loneliness, but then all of a sudden it changes just as quick as your own feelings change and you go on your mission. Again the way in which the film made this feeling enter you and created the mood in the film along with the mood you feel makes this a very good film, well in my opinion anyway.
Now I know you all have been wondering how the film could make you love it or hate it. Well everybody knows this if they have watched this film already! And the only way you feel like you happen to be part of the cast is that the camera is 1 singular camera, also it is not just any normal type of camera it happens to be a handheld camera, which makes it even better. I have to say that there is a lot, and I mean a lot, of running in this film. You could say that the running is what can make some people start hating this film, due to the fact that the camera tends to jump up and down in quick sub session. Though this just makes you feel like you are in the film more and more, because your eyes do tend to follow your body up and down when you run, also you tend to look towards the ground when running and this is just what the camera does. What happens when you solely enter a room so dark, you can't even see your hand in front of your face? Well that happens to the camera, when it enter a pitch black dark room. There is no special light on the camera to make just the people at home see everybody, there is just total blackness, they don't even consider putting night vision on, therefore this is what made me love the film so much as you are like an actual character.
there happens to be only 2 special features on this DVD, which is mainly quite surprising considering the fact that there tends to be a lot more, however you have probably already guessed that I happen to have not watched these features and therefore I cannot tell you much more about them than just the names, so I am sorry if you do like the special features parts. Here's the list: -Commentary by Director Matt Reeves -Cloverfield - Supplemental Files
I do feel incredibly bad that I cannot tell you much more than I have already about the special features. But anyhow I must carry on with my review.
On this DVD, there happens to be 6 quotes taken from well known sources. I shall list them below: Daily Star: "10/10 not to be missed Total Film: "Breathless Blockbuster Entertainment" News of the World: "Truly Terrifying! 5 Stars" Empire: "5 Stars" The Times: "4 Stars" The Sun "4 Stars"
Now I know many of the sources are not fairly built up due to the fact that shops such as HMV really want to sell these products and therefore it is not a good idea to put the bad quotes on either. But usually a DVD tends to have about 1 or 2, maybe 3 quotes at the most on the box itself. However this film shows that the majority of quotes said it was a brilliant film. I do agree with them all apart from The Times and The Sun, they could of at least given it 1 extra star, though I mustn’t really complain as my mom would disagree with all the quotes and only agree with the bad ones, which is not shown on the DVD.
In my opinion, I feel that this film is more aimed at teenagers and people in their 20's as I think that people 30 and over (like my mom) wouldn't like this film as much as I did due to the fact that they might not be able to put up with the constant jolting of the film. Though some of you may like it, though it is merely only a prediction, and I may be completely wrong.
Overall I really did enjoy this film, and although some of you may not like the constant jolting of this film it adds suspense and you feel as if you are in the film, and that is what I liked about it! This is the only film in the world where you become the character! Isn't that a good thing?
Thank you for reading and I would like a lot of good ratings and really good reviews, I'm pretty sure there is room for improvement, so just mention where I need to improve and I'll be very much delighted to know that I can improve because this happens to be my best so far and can't think of any other way I could improve so I really need help!
