Having literally just finished 'Cloverfield' I can honestly say from the bottom of my heart and soul that this is the WORST film I have EVER seen.
The character profiles are shallow and short not to mention boring and the actual background of any of the characters is unmentioned and provided a short and extremely brief look into the film which prevented any kind of immersion into the actual storyline and reminded me solely of the 'Blair Witch Project' except it lacked any kind of intellectual or obvious depth into the storyline except alien or possibly domestic attack which to be honest is a clear representation of terrorist attack. Any wish to watch this film is mis-guided and will only result in complete disappointment and will leave you wondering why you decided to waste minutes of your life and also money which you could have spent on something either more productive or entertaining.
This films background apparrently detailed an alien attack on earth and although the DVD blurb mentioned little (which I found to actually be a interesting trait, it takes you in with advertising that shows you only the best parts that they managed to accomplished using good CGI but failed to add anything substantial to the background of the story.) it also showed you little except lots of damage and destruction to New York city which was still only detailed or visually shown in small snippets. I could understand the use of small snippets due to the fact the film was made 85% on handicam however the fact they tried to make it seem all that more realistic (especially starting the film with imprinting credits as though the film was found by the US government giving you a sense of realism or a sense that you were part of said government) gave it a sense that you just couldnt immerse yourself within its obviously flawed storyline.
Similar films such as Independence Day gave you a larger feeling of computer editing yet also gave you a stranger feeling of realism and made you feel like you were actually alongisde the characters in the way the 'Cloverfield' made you feel like you were watching a film and you were completely free to leave anytime rather than wanting to sit there and finish the film. A low budget film that seems to have been re-mastered the same way Disney films were re-mastered and even those provided more of a solid storyline.
Recently, films have taken a different swing, rather then follow the standard format of START - MIDDLE - END they have taken a tarantino-esque look at films and attempted starting their film with a small amount of background and also the end and I must also stress that around 40 MINUTES of a 81 MINUTE film is nothing but someone filming a leaving party which leaves me with the feeling that the makers didnt quite have enough 'filler' for the film.
The packaging of the film depicts a CGI created beheaded stature of liberty with a line of destruction through new york which actually you NEVER see apart from the actual head of the sature of liberty earlier on in the 50 minute mark of the film. This depicts a more epic movie than was actually created.
The ending shows the camera immersed in rubble with characters telling each other they love each others which is then followed by more background filming of as man an woman character having a good day on a fun ride.
To summarise, please avoid being sucked in by this films advertising as we were, it depicts something far less then what you previously imagined you would see and also wastes half of the film at one of the characters leaving parties, take your money and 81 minutes of your life to a movie more fulfilling than the blair witch project/independance day ripofff movie
