Oh, there's always one isn't there? One person that isn't going to like what is the movie of the year, if not the decade. What is Cloverfield as a movie?
  • A movie you leave the screening talking about
  • A movie you check the internet for opinions on the minute you're home
  • A movie that, even when you're tucked up in bed shutting your eyes, you still question

But what is Cloverfield, the movie, not?
  • Any good

Didn't see that one coming. Believe me, I am the biggest Lost fan going and the one reason behind me wanting to watch this movie was one name - JJ Abrams. Nothing else mattered. I'm just hoping I spelt the 'one name' correctly. SEE! That's exactly the sort of humour not needed in this review of Cloverfield, nor is it nessacary in the actual movie. Therefore, why include it? I'm not going to start bashing Cloverfield bit by bit, that's for later, but February 1st 2008 marks the films first apperance in UK cinemas. Disappointed? Eh, just a bit.
Ultimately I have returned this evening from a crowded cinema of over excited cinema goers, who by the way would either be laughing nervously as the movie comes to an end or sitting there watching the credits eagle eyed for any simple clue to what Cloverfield actually was about. As mentioned before, I am a huge 'Lost' fan, and everything about it makes me want to discuss and see what it actually could mean and Cloverfield is the ultimate 'Lost' discussion point, only it is all crammed into 84 minutes and there are no answers next week.

Sickened is probably the best way to describe how I feel about the surprise way it was filmed, I was not expecting the whole movie to be shown to us the way it was presented at all. Had the cinema gone wrong, were we all ready for our refunds? Nope, what we were watching was to be a classified government file, and even when the home video turned on I was half expecting someone in the front row to bend down on one knee and perform the romantic gesture of proposing to their girlfriend infront of the public. The opening scene has Rob Hawkins (Michael Stahl-David) behind the personal video camera, filming Beth (Odette Yustman) the love of his life as she lay next to him in bed, on a day they plan to make the most of due to Rob moving to Japan on work. To somes surprise, if you hadn't read about it before hand, the movie does continue to pan out this way as the second cameraman of the movie, Hud (TJ Miller) takes over the role to capture Rob's leaving party and ultimately the huge disaster, bigger than 9/11, that hits New York City. I did eventually come to accept that the way the movie was presented was incredibly intelligent, however it was probably the first time I had felt sea sick in my cinema seat. I paid £7.10 for a sturdy experience.

Crying out, the monster lets out a noise that I can only compare to the noise you could associate with some of what we have heard from the monster in 'Lost'. Could this be my mind playing tricks on me, or coinciding with the forth season of Abrams' hit television show is he trying to tell us something? I doubt it, as this is no crossover movie, but just like 'Lost' all you will come to call the monster in Cloverfield is.. the monster. Clearly the most destructive creature we have came across in the horror genre, I came to be scared a lot more than I expected to be. I was more expecting a discovery of what exactly is destroying the lives of so many people, and how they would stop it. I guess from that point of view, Cloverfield is a senseless smash and grab where characters wear their hearts on their sleeves. Rob and Beth have said their goodbyes, and it is time for Rob to move on with his career, however as Rob along with; Hud, Marlena (Lizzy Caplan), Lily (Jessica Lucas) and Jason Hawkins (Mike Vogel) try to escape the monster following its demolition job of the Statue of Liberty and scenes reminiscent of the dirt and dust flooding the streets of a real earth shattering moment, Rob receives a call from Beth who has been trapped, injured, in her appartment and seeks rescue. This then leads to the life threatening, suicide bid, of Rob trying to cross the city with his friends to save Beth, but that is not before the untimely death of Rob's brother - the occassion when you begin to actually hate this monster for what it is doing to our characters of the movie, and leads us to the first tear jerker of Rob revealing to his mother of the death of her son thanks to the unidentified monster.

Viewing the monster is not easy, and when you really want to see what is going on as the army try to stop anymore destructure, you usually have Hud holding the camera on another scene. What do I hate about Cloverfield the most though? No, it is not the title of the movie making no sense to me and a field of clovers not being enough to cheer me up. Nor is it the fact that I keep referring to it as 'Cluverfield' because I can't get my head around the name. What I hate the most has to be... the monsters little babies, that it drops off its body and in turn attacks characters. We never get a true answer to what the purpose of these little monsters are, and they are little monsters in every true sense of the word, however are we lead to believe they carry a curse similar to that of say, a zombie? The casting was excellent in terms of them being unknowns that could perform on the big screen, but it could be said that too much dependance has been put on a sequel to reveal answers that are required. Everyone knows that Cloverfield has ended up being a huge success on a pretty tiny $25 million budget, including being the highest grossing box office hit in the month of January ever in the United States, but what I would have liked is for Cloverfield to be a stand alone mystery. Now we are left waiting for the story to be concluded, perhaps not for the characters included in the movie but for what the monster is, and even the producers themselves have suggested that we could see other stories from that night, or perhaps afterall this could we be left with one stand alone mystery and in 2018 still be awaiting the answers?

Cloverfield was either poor, or the most brilliant thing ever.
UPDATE: The morning after with my serious Cloverfield hangover dwindling, there's nothing quite like a 1am review to prove just how powerful of a movie it is. I feel to complete the review a few final thoughts are needed;
  • Those of you looking for something to decypher will be left with nothing more than a waste of your time, as there is nothing more here than guess work to be done.
  • Filming over Rob and Beth's romantic day out, clearly something Rob was keeping to watch upon arrival in Japan, the way throughout the film it cuts in and out of a month prior is one of the few genius aspects of the movie.
  • At times terrifying, I feel there was room here to use a higher age certificate than the 15, however with a destinct lack of characters screaming bad language in their panic out of the city there were more than enough reasons to keep the age certificate down.
  • Cloverfield fails to look as visually accomplished as another recent NYC disaster movie, 'A Day After Tomorrow', although that was a movie with an extra $100m on their budget for a movie that was supposedly about a very real threat - so why is it Cloverfield panics me just as much?

Personally, I loved Cloverfield. It was truly an experience. P.S. I know I'm being anally retentive but the other disaster flick you mention toward the end of your review is called 'THE Day After Tomorrow'... ;¬)

Having just seen this in the Cinema, and quite enjoyed it. I think the comment below by Chemical Romance sums up exactly what I was going to say, and personally I thought the " Blair Witch Project " was one of the worst Films I have ever seen..........Roy.....
