Regardless of the presence of mind-twisting, building-high monsters, "CLOVERFIELD" is one of the most cherished, memorable monster movie ever made. It may well precursor a new wave of films that rely on the amalgamation of the incredible and recognizable. But for now, director Matt Reeves's movie is its own creation, a jittery thrill ride that is ruthless in its escalation of tension, merciless in its intensity. And what a fun indeed!
Cloverfield shall feel indebted to both "Godzilla" and "The Blair Witch Project". It's a full on monster movie like Godzilla with a enormous creature horrifying the city of New York. And like "The Blair Witch Project", a dose of Dramamine before watching wouldn't hurt since the entire movie is told through the lens of a hand held video camera.
Hud (T J Miller) was using a hand held camera to testimony films at a farewell party of his best friend, Rob (Michael Stahl-David) when all hell breaks loose in the streets of the city. Hud, Rob and Rob's brother Jason (Mike Vogel), are in fact taking a break from the party and talking about the status of relationship between Rob and Beth (Odette Yustman) when the huge concussion rocks Manhattan, knocking out power to much of the city.
The guests move to the street to inspect when series of massive explosions starts accompanied by ominous footstep thuds which begin to rock the buildings. It brings sad memories of Sept 11 attack and some of the scenes might be directly lifted from there. There are so many scary scenes effectively filmed. The film makes good use of other media than just Hud's camera. There are some fleeting glimpses of the monster between the buildings, and then a cable news network in an electronic shop airs a good look of it. Then there is a harrowing trip through the subway tunnel.
Cloverfield smartly refrains from trying to explain the monster's presence, though Hud has a few choice ideas. This movie has been made so differently, we see what the characters see and not an aerial view of everything. So we know what the characters know, nothing extra at all. And they just know that something has gone horribly wrong and somehow they have to survive whatever it is.
More and more we proceed, the picture gets clearer and more scary. There are so many twists that it scares the pants off us !!!!!
