Closer is the pain filled story of four attractive adults living in London and how their lives become connected through strands of love, hate, passion and revenge. Danny and Alice meet serendipitously when he help her to the hospital after she is hit by a taxi (yet miraculously she stays unharmed) she is flighty, from New York and free, he is smart, a journalist and slightly dull. What ensues is a whirl wind relationship between them, but when Dan ... ...deceit. Closer is one of the oddest movies that I have ever seen, not because its premise is wacky or anything about the production is particularly strange, but because the film is void of anything nice, there truly isn't any heart or warmth and all the main characters are achingly mean and frustrating. Yet I was instantly drawn into its stark world hooked onto every beautiful word daring it to shock me, but I don't think I really enjoyed the experience. ...

Advantages: good looking cast Disadvantages: depressing storyline/ending
Closer was one of those films which I'd wanted to watch for ages for several reasons:
a) I've always has a soft spot for Clive Owen
b) I have always thought Julia Roberts is a good actress
c) I'd never seen Jude Law in a film and had heard a lot of good things about him.
Hmmm, points a), b) and c) above will be addressed later in this review!
CAST, CREW & STUFF LIKE THAT

Pretty much an all star cast with Clive ... ...worth mentioning them! Closer was directed by Mike Nichols and was developed from a play written by Patrick Marber who also wrote the screenplay for the film. The film was produced by Cary Brokaw and John Calley and the original music for the film was by Steven Patrick Morrissey. Damien Rice's song "The Blower's Daughter" features in the film as well as a few other songs being played in the background in some scenes.
Closer was released in 2004 ...

Advantages: classily acted, coolly shot, makes it point Disadvantages: a little heavy handed, no sympathy grip
...intimate than sex. Closer is a film about intimacy, in that none of the protagonists have a clue what it is. The story isn't really as complex as people had suggested to me. Two couples wind their way through various adulterous twists and turns in an attempt to find happiness (or perhaps, as one character suggests, in an attempt to avoid it, since they don't think they deserve it). Larry (Clive Owen) is a boorish, highly sexed dermatologist with ... ...they were whiny and irksome. Closer does have moments of emotional clarity and gripping pace, but sometimes it's lost in the whinging hideousness of its major players. As the dusky kings and queens shuffle about the board, mating and checkmating, sometimes their deliberate coldness to one another, and lack of understanding about real closeness, makes them too detached from the viewer.
At 104 minutes, this isn't a bum-number and doesn't really outstay ...

Advantages: Good cast, interesting examination of 'love' Disadvantages: Extremely poor script, relies too much on chance and coincidence, can get quite uncomfortable
It is hard to summarise what the film ‘Closer’ is about. It is hard to even tell what kind of genre it fits into. It is included her under ‘romance’ but that couldn’t be further from the truth. The film is astonishingly unromantic and gives such a harsh, brutal depiction of love that one could also argue that this isn’t even a love story. Director Mike Nichols has assembled an all-star cast in recruiting Jude Law, Natalie Portman, Julia Roberts and ... ...to have been in every single film released over the past few years (the actor is in serious danger of being over-exposed at the moment), plays Dan, a journalist and failed writer. The movie begins with a chance encounter with Alice (Portman), who has fled her life in New York and settled in London. Dan and Alice fall in love. The film then introduces us to Anna (Roberts), an acclaimed photographer who Dan falls in love with, and Larry (Clive Owen), ...

Advantages: Powerful, Deep, Brilliatly-made Disadvantages: I liked Julia Roberts and Jude Law and now feel dirty
...gravestone is patted down. In Closer time moves on and people move on. As such, it is entirely believable that these are real lives, and the stories true.
Which brings us conveniently to the real defining message of the film – The Truth.
Closer will tell you more about the role and importance of truth in relationships than any number of marriage guidance counsellors, therapists or episodes of Oprah Winfrey you care to find.
Each character is destined ... ...success to date ‘The Graduate’. Closer has to be up there with his best work and I can’t wait for his next.
The Cast:
All fantastic. I was one of those who got a little sick of the 'Julia Roberts for President' brigade doing the rounds at the time of Erin Brokovich, but even I had to admit, at no point in Closer did she try to steal the show. She played her character excellently and made the least impact of the four, which was exactly what was ...

Are humans meant to mate for life? What drives someone in a perfectly good relationship to cheat and risk losing the one that they love and that loves them? Is it possible to love more than one person at the same time? How well does anyone really know the one that they love? Directed by Mike Nichols (THE GRADUATE, BIRDCAGE, WORKING GIRL), CLOSER questions the nature of relationships and fidelity as it follows the tangled web created by Dan (Jude Law), Alice (Natalie Portman), Anna (Julia Roberts), and Larry (Clive Owen). Dan, a British writer of obituaries, and Alice, a young American stripper, meet in the film's opening scene when a London cab runs her down. Cut to a year later: Dan and Alice are now a couple, but he is suddenly smitten with Anna, a beautiful American photographer. In an ironic twist of fate, Anna meets Larry, a British doctor, and they are soon a couple, despite Dan's continuing obsession. But the entanglements don't end there, and ultimately, someone is sure to get hurt. The four players do justice to a script that is humorous, raw and disarmingly honest about adult relationships.
