... what a glorious feeling, I'm happy again.
Although this particular song seems irrelevent for this this film, it just so happens to be a reccuring tune that is heard for the duration. "I'm singing in the rain", famously sung by the great Gene Kelly in the musical "Singin' in The Rain" back in 1952, has been the inspiration for many films, having said that, A Clockwork Orange is a film you'd least expect to be part of that group. A Clockwork Orange adapted by the novel of the same title is about the things in society that are wrong, so wrong that they are tried to change by using contoversial and politically incorrect solutions.
The film follows the story of Alex De Large (a groudbreaking performance from Malcolm McDowell) a teenage young man with social issues. "Our humble narrator" is the leader of a small streetgang known as the 'Droogs'. These four hoodlems; dressed in their infamous white outfits, complete with bowler hats, black mascara and walking sticks, spend their evenings beating up the homeless, driving wrecklessly, getting into fights and letting themselves into people's homes to cause more mischief.
It is at this point where I return to my opening reference. The song is sung by De Large after breaking into a writer's house. He sings the song, "Singing in the rain" in the build up to raping the writer's wife while simouteously kicking the writer while he is injured on the floor (ultimately leaving him disabled) and also vanadlising the room with the help of his buddies (knocking over chairs, tables, bookshelves etc). It is this scene that makes the alltime classic song associated with violence and controvosy as well as its original intention of being uplifting, pleasant and about falling in love. How ironic...
After some disagreement with his fellow Droogs which leads to more "of the old ultra violence", Alex decides to go to a house on its own in the country to visit the solo occupant (who has an affinity with cats). He brings his droogs with him. They perform their usual routine of letting themselves in and Alex is confronted by the homeowner whom Alex kills with the aid of a large... lets just say 'sexually suggestive' ornament. When Alex makes his escape, his Droogs turn against him and leave him lying on the driveway for the police to pick up.
Faced with a long time in prison for his murder/manslaughter charge, Alex volunteers in a radical, new rehabbilitation program that claims to let you free into the public again after two weeks of theorpy. After the theorpy is completed, (another infamous scene that I won't go into) Alex is let into the world again only to discover that his life outside of prison has fallen apart and everyone he knows hates him, it seems that the whole world is against him, which leads to an incredible climax...
Director Stanley Kubrick (Full Metal Jacket, 2001: A Space Oddesy) captures the surrealist work of Anthony Burgess' novel masterfully. Kubick's simple yet stylised storytelling adds to the spectacle and controversy. This, added with sythesised effects (the opening credits is most profund) makes this film a truely surreal expereience.
The performances are excellent, the highest of Brttish cinema standards (Hollywood, take notes). As I briefly metioned earlier Malcolm McDowell ( I spy, Gangster No 1) makes his most defining performance in his carear in this film. Alex De Large (his character) is a witty, typical London commoner who also has a 'posh' speach pattern, especially when narrating over the mayhem. McDowell is boosted by a superb surporting cast including Patrick Magee (Zulu), Adrienne Corri (Dr Zhivago) and Miriam Karlin.
As you may have guessed, the film is violent, so vilent that it was banned in this county by Kubirck himself. It was then rereleased to honour his death in 1999. There are moments where one may cringe at, and the strange thing is, the violence isn't cringed at because it is bloody and in your face. The violence in this film is somewhat more psychological and brutal and also destroys the subtle connection between sex and violence as alot of the violence in this film is enhanced by sexual obscurity (rape for example is just as violent as it is sexually violation). The violence, the sex and the drugs in young Alex's life shows that he takes life for granted and abuses it whenever he can to make his own life better.
What makes the film total unforgettable is its unique imagery and startling but intriquing soundtrack. Stanley Kubrick's willingness to be bold and make a brilliant yet controversial statment about how we live shines via the vivid cinematography. The soundtrack, mostly classical music from the likes of Ludwig Van Beethoven (Alex's favourite musician, which eventually leads to his downfall) makes the film more of a cult opera that anything else, giving it both a surreal feel and a flowing grace that is rare to see. The soundtrack also contributes to the story in a grim and shocking fashion; an example. Alex De Large (before his imprisonment) picks up two girls from a music store and takes them home for a threesome. This event is sped up with the overture of William Tell). All in all, every little aspect of this film increases its overall power and rememberance. Not very often do filmmakers see this and employ it to great effect especcialy these days where filmmakers are more like businessmen rather than story tellers.
The ultimate theme for the film is free will versus state control, a theme that is brought across clearly due to the characters involved. Examples being the chief prison warden and Alex's teacher, both men's professions are that of the state and therefore both are portrayed as intimidating men who wish to quash free will. (you see, school and prison share similarities <cough, cough). Alex's free will, albeit a free will that is plagued with illegality is a perfect example for the argument the film raises. Should we all be brainwashed by the government to remove violence off the street and thus live in a peaceful utopia, or should we keep society as it is with its broad variety and freedom but with its imperfections.
BOTTOM LINE A Clockwork Orange is the best of the best in Brit cult films, standing proudly aside or even surpassing the likes of other Brit classics like "The Itallian Job" and "Get Carter". A deffinate must see film that you will definately remember for one reason or another. Stanley Kubrick has interwoven his actors' performances, his cinematograpghy and his soundtrack into a finely edited picture (nominated for four Academy Awards including Best Pictrue) that is truely special. This is a personal fabourite of mine that is without a doubt in my top ten best. A film that's impact is undiminished and not ignored. Its content more relevant in today's world than ever.

...The notoriety of “A Clockwork Orange” is probably more than enough to reel potential viewers anyway, and while Stanley Kubrick’s film interpretation is not quite as fulfilling as the original Anthony Burgess novel it is not disappointing. This film is destined to change your entire perspective, Beethoven may not sound quite so bad, codpieces will induce fear and milk will never really compare. The warped nature of the film is it's most defining and enduring feature. Banned for over 20 years on these shores, it has been summoned to entice a new generation. Advantages: Great Lead Performance, Interesting Disadvantages: Bronson's life has nothing of note to make an involving story
Michael Petersen is Britain's most infamous prisoner, however you probably know him as Charles Bronson, the broad moustached man of muscle who played a large part in the Broadmoor riots of the eighties.
Interest in the criminal underbelly of Britain is probably the driving force in the British film industry. But this is not a crime film a'la Lock Stock etc. I would compare this more to the Australian film Chopper, both are abstract profiles of men who's criminal celebrity is only large in their own minds.
The blurb on the DVD box compares this to Kubrick's ClockworkOrange, in all honesty it's nowhere near the genius of that film which has a message even more relevant in recent times.

DVD Description
From its opening shot of Malcolm McDowell staring with evil intent directly into the camera (which pulls back to reveal him drinking a glass of milk), Stanley Kubrick's brilliant CLOCKWORK ORANGE announces itself as a completely new kind of viewing experience. Banned in Britain for decades, the film, set in an unidentified future, overwhelms the senses with its almost comic depictions of rape and violence set to an upbeat classical and pop music score; its magnificent, colorful, futuristic set designs; and its utter determination to shock, frighten, and thoroughly entertain its audience. Kubrick based his chilling masterpiece on Anthony Burgess's culture-shaking novel about a young man, growing into adulthood, who has a bit of a problem with authority figures. (Interestingly, Burgess's stunning piece of fiction contains 21 chapters, but Kubrick ends his film after chapter 20.) When Alex (a career-defining performance by McDowell) and his droogs go out for a little bit of the old ultraviolence, he is caught and forced to undergo controversial treatment that will make it impossible for him to commit violent acts--but has severe side effects. Kubrick's film purposely confuses crime and punishment, cause and effect, hero and villain, irony and satire, filled with oxymoron and paradox, taking on science, politics, societal mores, education, sexual awakening, and parental responsibility all in a new language (both verbal and visual) that would change the cinema forever. No one who has seen it has ever been able to hear "Singin' in the Rain" or Ludwig van again in quite the same way.
