box-office smash from the producers of Patriot Games. When his mentor Admiral James Greer (James Earl Jones) becomes gravely ill, Ryan is appointed acting CIA Deputy Director of Intelligence. His first assignment: investigate the murder of the president's friends, a prominent U.S. businessman with secret ties to Columbian drug cartels. Unbeknownst to Ryan, the CIA has already dispatched a deadly field operative (Willem Dafoe) to lead a paramilitary force against the Columbian drug lords. Caught in the crossfire, Ryan takes matters into his own hands, risking his career and life for the only cause he still believes in - the truth.

It is adapted from the Tom Clancy novel of the same name, features a bit more intrigue and corruption than Patriot Games and reverts Jack Ryan back to a more solid CIA role, and was acclaimed as a better film than Patriot Games.
Ford stars as Jack Ryan, appointed CIA deputy director following the deteriorating health of his mentor, Admiral Greer (James Earl Jones). With political situations tense on Colombia and strains between it and the States, Ryan assures there will be no black ops action in the South American country, only for National Security Advisor Cutter (Harris Yulin) to secretly order otherwise. Ryan ends up going to Colombia with John Clark (Willem Dafoe) to sort out the problems caused by this order. He uncovers political corruption as things become clear, and the path leads all the way back to the White House.
There are some solid performances throughout this film, particularly with the leads. Harrison Ford gives a good turn as Ryan, and Willem Dafoe is solid as Clark. There are also good turns from Joaqim de Almeida as Cortez and some convincing acting from Anne Archer as Ryan's ever suffering wife Cathy. The remainder of the cast do well.
The film is acclaimed as better than Patriot Games. Politically, it was more stable and seemed more comfortable dealing with a South American country than Patriot Games did with Ireland. The film has less care about it in this way and that kind of gives us a bit more action. There is a bit of confusion in the film, and you are never sure who is the guilty party in the film and who isn't, even at the end, and this I find rather annoying.
The film kept me entertained all the way through, and I was impressed with Noyce's direction. The scenery was well used, particularly with the Colombian scenes, and the whole ensemble of the film is typical of a Tom Clancy tale - tell everyone what's going on, then tell them something different and light some fireworks. The DVD is available from amazon.co.uk for £3.98.
Advantages: Good action and story. Disadvantages: The Hovis tune.
This is another excellent Harrison Ford film, surrounding the war on drugs. A friend of the US President is involved with, and then killed by a Colombian drug cartel, the Cali Cartel. In retaliation the President indirectly orders the setting up of a team to destroy the cartel and all its members. Harrison Ford is cast as Dr Jack Ryan, the Deputy Director of Intelligence. The other members of the intelligence staff keep Ryan in the dark over the ... ...the truth. The film has a number of interesting twists in it and is extremely well directed and acted. The action shots are very well filmed and in some excellent locations. The only part of the film I did not like was the sequence when dead Americans were being fetched home in coffins. This sad moment was done in extremely good taste, but unfortunately the backing music was the same music used in the traditional Hovis Bread advert and this completely ...

Advantages: A good film with strong performances from everyone Disadvantages: A slow start
, with various people on both sides doing their upmost to save their own skins if it all goes wrong. In the end Jack Ryan has to chose between loyalty to the Whitehouse and doing what is morally right.
This film has received some negative reviews however I feel this comes from the pureists who feel the film does not adhere to the book page by page. In addition there are the odd cheesy moment. However on the positive side there are a couple of very well executed action scenes.
On its own Clear and PresentDanger is a good movie that
once it gets going will keep you entertained for a couple of hours
