Harrison Ford returns as Jack Ryan for a second time in the third Of Tom Clancy`s novels to hit the big screen. The film begins with the assassination of a close personal friend of the President who had dealings with a drug cartel in Colombia. This is followed by Admiral Greer played by James Earl Jones being diagonosed as terminally ill. Jack Ryan is promoted to Acting Deputy Director of Intelligence. His first job being to go before Congress and ask for further funding to combat the drug cartels in Colombia with a pledge that no troops would be used. However unknown to him this is exactly the purpose of the funds and they have already dispatched a operative (William Dafoe) to lead a group of soldiers in covert operations against the drug cartel. Jack Ryan learns all is not what it seems and gets caught up in the middle of the fight, with various people on both sides doing their upmost to save their own skins if it all goes wrong. In the end Jack Ryan has to chose between loyalty to the Whitehouse and doing what is morally right.
This film has received some negative reviews however I feel this comes from the pureists who feel the film does not adhere to the book page by page. In addition there are the odd cheesy moment. However on the positive side there are a couple of very well executed action scenes. On its own Clear and Present Danger is a good movie that once it gets going will keep you entertained for a couple of hours To date three actors have played Jack Ryan and it has to be said Harrison Ford makes the part his own by bringing depth and substance to a character that was otherwise portrayed as somewhat weak and two dimensional by the other two actors who have played Jack Ryan.
