Advantages: good plot+director+lead actor Disadvantages: hard to deceipher sub-titles+expensive for a video
...of Kurosawa, the score also deserves a speacial mention, it is audatious. The film is sub-titled i prefer this to dubbing as it avoids making the production from looking cheap, although the writting can be hard to read sometimes as there is no black background for the text - not a good idea on black and white film.
The video is quite expensive at about seventeen quid but ultimately it is worth it for this timeless classic....

...Akiro Kurosawa's "Seven Samurai" (aka Schichinin no Samurai) is one of those movies which you will never read a bad review of. It is widely regarded as the classic movie in the 'action' genre and the one which set the standard and the template for all modern action movies to follow. That said, one could never just accuse it of being solely an action movie, because it is so much deeper than that.
This movie has it all, which makes it difficult to know where to start. The actual plot itself is quite simple. Seven out of work samurai are hired by a small town which is having the life blood drained out of it by bandits. It was the first movie which took the formula of having a group of hard men assembled to solve the problems of a group of others and is a formula which has been much copied since. Of course, few, if any, have matched...

Advantages: Top quality film. Disadvantages: Not a lot of DVD extras.
...My collection of Kurosawa DVD's just keeps growing because he seems to have delivered every time.
This is yet another film by the Japanese film-making genius that offers something different. Whereas 'Yojimbo' was a harder edged action film this sequel takes a far more light hearted approach, with genuine laughs along the way that aren't lost in the subtitles.
Toshiro Mifune again stars for Kurosawa and as usual delivers in a way that only he can; gruff, rough & tough!
Perhaps the DVD could have done with more extras, but the introduction with critic Alex Cox does offer some interest.
If your a first time Kurosawa buyer i'd recommend 'Seven Samurai' or 'Yojimbo', but this is a must for all genuine fans of his work....
