I have just got this DVD as part of the Ronnie Barker Ultimate Collection boxset, and what a lovely little series it was. Clarence was a 1988 BBC comedy starring Ronnie Barker and Josephine Tewson, written by Ronnie Barker under the pseudonym "Bob Ferris". It was Barker's final sitcom appearance before his first retirement.
Set in 1937, on the day of King George VI's coronation, Clarence Sale, a myopic removal man is clearing the house of a snooty upper-class lady who is moving abroad. There, he meets Jane Travers, her maid. The pair are mutually attracted and soon Clarence proposes to her. Jane decides that they should have a trial period of living together in a small cottage she has been been left in a will from an Aunt to see if they are compatible. This leads to many attemps on Clarence's part to 'move the relationship to the next level' but results in him sharing a bed with a bolster and Travers to preserve her chasteness. The series followed this unconventional relationship, as well as Clarence's many mishaps. There are no extras on the DVD but I enjoyed it that much, that it does not detract. This is one of those programms that, not just needed, but deserved a second series and I recommend it to everyone.
Advantages: Very Well Humoured, good story line and events Disadvantages: -
