her parents are killed by an earthquake, five-year-old Ayla wanders through the forest completely alone. Cold, hungry, and badly injured by a cave lion, the little girl is as good as gone until she is discovered by a group who call themselves the Clan of the Cave Bear. This clan, left homeless by the same disaster, has little interest in the helpless girl who comes from the tribe they refer to as the "Others". Only their medicine woman sees in Ayla a fellow human, worthy of care. She painstakingly nurses her back to health--a decision that will forever alter the physical and emotional structure of the clan. Although this story takes place roughly 35,000 years ago, its cast of characters could easily slide into any modern tale. The members of the Neanderthal clan, ruled by traditions and taboos, find themselves challenged by this outsider, who represents the physically modern Cro-Magnons. And as Ayla begins to grow and mature, her natural tendencies emerge, putting her in the middle of a brutal and dangerous power struggle.Although Jean Auel obviously takes certain liberties with the actions and motivations of all our ancestors, her extensive research into the Ice Age does shine through--especially in the detailed knowledge of plants and natural remedies used by the medicine woman and passed down to Ayla. Mostly, though, this first in the series of four is a wonderful story of survival. Ayla's personal evolution is a compelling and relevant tale.--Sara Nickerson, Amazon.com--This text refers to the hardcover edition.

THE CLAN OF THE CAVEBEAR
JEAN AUEL
INTRODUCTION
I look forward more and more to the books my son brings home from school, as he is introducing me to 'children's' works that were not written when I was at school - many years ago!
It amazes me just how good some of these so called 'children's books' are, and how much, as an adult, I enjoy reading them.
My latest dip into his English Literature work was 'The Clan of the CaveBear' written by Jean Auel (pronounced owl).
Seemingly this book, written in 1980, is the first in the 'Earth's Children Series', there are five books altogether.
After reading this book I shall certainly be looking for the remaining four, it was astonishing.
THE AUTHOR
Jean Auel is an American writer born in 1936, who is most famous for this Earth Series ...
Advantages: Amazing story with an incredible history Disadvantages: Very descriptive and drawn out
In The Clan of the CaveBear, we are taken back 35,000 years to a time when two species of man lived on the earth amid icy glaciers and woolly mammoths. When five year old Ayla, a Cro-Magnon, is split from her parents by a shattering earthquake, she is taken in by a clan of Neanderthals. Iza, a medicine woman, and Creb, a powerful holy man, take in the sick and injured child. But her tall and thin body, long blonde hair, fair skin and blue eyes, make her stand out from the rest of the clan who are both fearful of her and intimidated by her and the differences she has from them. Yet her intelligence and capability and the fact that she seems to bring luck wherever she goes, makes her admired by everyone except Broud, the future leader of the Clan, who seems to hate the ground she walks on.
Follow the journey of Ayla in her fight ...
Advantages: Envisages neanderthal life and spiritualism Disadvantages: A bit slow and long-winded in parts
the Prehistoric period.
I watched a documentary on Neanderthals, where they proved that they were intelligent... they had tools and even buried flowers with their dead...
BACKGROUND
Jean Auel takes fact and imagines what it may have been like to live back when these two species co-existed.
In the book the neanderthals are also thought of as stupid by cro-magnon humans. They are less civilised in a sense as they haven't yet developed enough to communicate orally- but they do communicate in sounds and body language. They also live, in clans, in caves still - where as cro-magnon humans have developed settlements like tents.
Neanderthals are portrayed as being very spiritual :- they believe that everyone has their own totem spirit, an animal... and that spirit chooses you - in Ayla's case a cavebear scratched her leg. Their religious beliefs ...
