Advantages: A true feelgood comedy, it has the theme tune to Bonanza in it Disadvantages: American ideals, soppy ending
...the wisecracking man bored with city life, Phil the repressed supermarket manager and Ed the macho man with commitment issues. There guide through this journey of self discovery is an aging cowboy known as Curly (played perfectly by Jack Palance) who teaches Mitch the simple things in life as well as how to deliver a calf!
So, doesn't sound like much of a comedy does it? Well, it is in the interactions between Mitch, Ed and Phil which add the most ... ...modern three stooges and truly make the film worth watching. Crystal is on top wisecracking form and Palance is excellent as the aging cowboy too old fashioned for a modern world. Further, humour is added through the minor characters including the heads of an ice cream company who can guess the ice cream to go with any meal (a swipe at Ben and Jerrys methinks!)
The only letdown in this film is the pointless casting of Helen Slater as the token love ...

Advantages: clean humour, back to the old days type of movie Disadvantages: some people may miss the point unless they really get into the show
Nowadays people are just so busy and tied up in their day to day life that we are missing out and aren't happy any more. This movie is a prime example of that and how Billy Crystal's character gets out of that "rut". We are given an example of how most of our lives look, how unhappy, and unfulfilled we might be and what someone does to rectify that problem. A cattle round up is so far from what people even think about anymore but that is where Billy ... ...do. They meet great people and some not so great people and are taught, especially Billy the Kid that humour should not be at other's expense, even if that is how you try to deal with a situation. Billy is taught that there really is only one thing is life that is important and he must find out what that is to be happy, we all must find out what that one thing is to be happy. After lots and lots of great experiences and lessons "Billy the Kid" comes ...

Advantages: Passes the time, pleasent performances Disadvantages: Seen it all before, lacks real laughs
...wrong, the performances are fine with the four guys being perfectly matched. Liotta pulls out the usual mad eyes but the material they have to work with is just plain ordinary.
I can see why the movie was a surprise hit, it's just the kind of inoffensive drivel that appeals the middle age crowd who rarely go to the cinema. I'm sure there are plenty of people who long to break free of the normal lives and take on this kind of experience so perhaps the movie was a chance to get close to it.
-The DVD -
CitySlickers, sorry I mean Wild Hogs is presented in 2.35:1 widescreen. The transfer is nice and pristine, of course I'd expect that from a modern release. The soundtrack follows my usual of comedy dvd's. There's nothing worth turning on the home cinem amp for apart from the bar explosion.
- Extras -
An audio commentary from the director...

DVD Description
When a thoroughly urbanised executive (Billy Crystal) is struggling to find meaning in his life, his two best friends (Daniel Stern and Bruno Kirby) find the perfect cure--a fantasy cowboy vacation. The three friends then rope and ride their way down a entertaining trail that leads to a better understanding of themselves and each other. Crystal, Stern, and Kirby are exceptional as the three fish-out-of-water cowpokes, but Jack Palance steals the show in an Academy Award-winning performance.
