The City Of Lost Souls - 2000 - Japan
Supercharged fantasy thriller from Takashi (Audtion & Ichi The Killer) Miike. I think this is one of Miike's most accessible films it's more fun, less violent and faster moving than most of his films.
In this violent action/comedy/thriller, Teah (A half Brazilian half Japanese model) plays Mario a supercool gunman trying to save his girlfriend from the clutches of an evil, bondage obsessed Triad boss who loves playing Ping Pong.
Mario accidently steals a bundle of cocaine from the triads and all hell breaks loose. Throw in a bad guy with a mohawk, martial arts, a cockfight filmed in the style of the matrix, plenty of Hong Kong inspired shoot outs, a blind girl and a booby trapped ping pong table you start to get the idea.
As usual with Miike the cinematography is crisp glossy and colourful. He uses quick editing and different grades of film to great effect. This is quite a high budget film and it shows! Everything in this film is stylishly and beautifully shot.
The soundtrack is also great mixing heavy metal, hip-hop, Brazilian music and reggae!
On the down side, I found the ending a bit weak, I won't give anything away but I just shrugged. Teah is a wooden actor, his character, Mario, is not very interesting and is very one-dimensional compared to characters in other Miike films. Teah however manages to pull off his performance as the square jawed action hero quite well.
The Features on this DVD are okay; a trailer, a short but helpful booklet, short film notes, a selection of other Miike trailers and a short interview with the man. Nothing spectacular.
Film is in Japanese with, nice easy to read English subtitles. Good Dolby sound and the print itself is crisp and in wide screen.
This is an off the wall but enjoyable film that is fun to watch and should appeal to anyone who likes Takashi Miike, new wave Japanese cinema, Manga, Hong Kong action films and the downright strange. Ultimately this film does however lack that extra something to make it truly great.
