Cidade de Deus is perhaps the best movie made outside North America and Europe, ranking as one of my favourite movies of all time.
The story deals with the alarming rise of drug dealing in the slums of Rio de Janeiro since the 1960s, following the based on true-life stories of characters from childhood to adulthood. The narrator and main character is an aspiring photographer, risking his life to give the world an insight into these slum areas.
The movie is as tragic as modern film gets, leaving the story off with an uncomforting finale. Watching the bleak documentary in the extras afterwards offers little more hope for this ironically nicknamed city.
The extras are decent, including the aforementioned hour-long documentary, which is fascinating but very uncomfortable viewing. However, the film loses its poignancy on second viewing as we already know the tales of the characters that the story relies on.
But this is a small criticism of what is otherwise a modern classic, and an example of foreign filmmaking.

Hi and welcome to Ciao. I agree that this is a brilliant film (see my review on it). You need to write a bit more to get higher ratings though. All the best.
