ambitious "reinvention of the circus" seemed quixotic. Inspired by European precedents, this was a big top downsized to a more intimate, single ring, as the French-Canadian troupe jettisoned animals, banished the usual fright-wigged clowns in favour of funny folks versed in (gulp) pantomime, and focused on acrobats, contortionists and illusionists. Conventional wisdom would have held that such esoterica was doomed, but anyone lucky enough to catch that initial Cirque production (or, for that matter, any of its subsequent offerings) knows just how wrong conventional wisdom can be.Cirque's creative brain trust, including "guide" Guy Laliberte and director Franco Dragone, have crafted each production as an extended performance piece framed by recurrent characters, unified production design and underlying themes. Already mesmerising visual tableaux and astonishing illusions are given an added poignancy (and, occasionally, true gravity) by the productions' underlying comments about society, conformity, beauty and emotion; even without such conscious motifs, however, Cirque's sheer artistry is never less than riveting.Quidamrevolves around an Everychild, living with self-absorbed (and deliberately archetypal) parents, who is whisked away to a vividly surreal world where Cirque's remarkable acrobats and artists take literal flight. Their tools are often prosaic--oversized flying rings, an open steel wheel large enough for a single inhabitant, skateboards, ropes--yet the resulting images are stunning. Injecting further drama and atmosphere is the score (here by musical director Benoit Jutras), which is as far removed from traditional circus music as Cirque's "acts" are from Barnum&Bailey. Performed with synthesisers, electric guitar, solo reed instruments, percussion and voice (often singing in a kind of Esperanto that's tantalising yet foreign), Cirque's music can be dismissed as New Age only until heard in its intended context.Quidamcan't quite achieve the sheer, enveloping wonder that its theatrical source does, but for fans of Cirque du Soleil's unique performance art, this latest presentation sustains the troupe's magic. --Sam Sutherland, Amazon.com

Advantages: Can see the show if you can't afford a show ticket Disadvantages: Not quite as good as being in the theatre itself!
I am a huge fan of the CirqueDuSoleil shows and have been lucky enough to win tickets to two of the shows. The last time I won tickets I couldn't actually go on the night they offered me the VIP package so they advised they could offer me two seats in the best section instead and they would send me a few bits of merchandise to make up for not being able to enjoy the VIP package. One of these items was the DVD of the show. I didn't actually watch it until recently as I completely forgot they had given it to me as when it had arrived in the post I had simply put it on my shelf to watch after seeing the real thing!
Directed by Nick Morris this DVD is the full show of Varekai. It was filmed back in 2003 and was during a performance at the Grand Chapiteau in Toronto.
The show:
The show is quite hard to describe really as in ...
Advantages: Fantastic performers and players Disadvantages: None really
The cirquedu soliel was "born" in 1984 from a group of public entertainers in Quebec Canada, and within ten years were taking their "reinvention of the circus" around the globe, with six shows on permanent tour and two based in the USA ( one in Vegas, and one in Disneyworld Florida)
There are no animals, stupid clowns or any of the associated circus tomfoolery I knew as a child, this has been replaced by a show encompassing artistic players, focussing on acrobatics, contortionists and illusion.
There are only around thirty people per troupe, consequently the beautifully costumed artsists that perform the almost balletic pieces between the main acts, will later be seen flying above your head in an awe inspiring acrobatic display. This may lead you to think the performers are "jacks of all trades, masters of none", where to be correct ...
Advantages: Breathtaking Show new perspecitves Disadvantages: Not the same as seeing it live
First question - Do you know what cirquedusoleil is?
Well if you don't then it's pretty hard to some up really. I mean yes it is a circus in principle but it is so much more. I'm sure if you have experianced the magic that is the CirqueDuSoleil then you are fully aware of how hard it is to describe to people.
The cirquedusoleil is a breathtaking show from start to finish, and is made up of a number of acts which are all spectacular to watch. The real magic though is the way in which the show is presented, with each individual show having a unique and interesting soudtrack, which is played live during each performance. The way in which the cast work is fantastic, and the sheer randomness of the show means that at all times multiple things are going on for you to watch and to grab your attention.
Being an A level drama ...
