Sitting alone in my flat one night, I stumbled upon the beginning of a film called child's play. Without knowledge of what the film was about, I began watching, after all the title didn't suggest that it would be the scariest film I have ever seen!
The story begins with a police chase through a toy warehouse ending with the fatal shooting of a serial killer (Charles "Chucky" Ray). With his dying breath he reaches for the nearest toy - a cute and adorable red headed doll, and says an ancient chant that transfers his soul into the doll.
Meanwhile an 8 year old boy tells his mother he wants the latest toy that he's seen on tv, and for his birthday his mother gets him (yes you've guessed it) Chucky the doll, unaware that the soul of Charles Ray is part of the package.
There are plenty of scares, deaths and witty one liners to follow, and I liked the way everyone blamed the kid for the killings, dismissing his revelations that his doll was alive and very evil.
The film was one scare after another, you never really know who will survive as much of the plot was unpredictable with unexpected twists and turns.
The special effects were great, the doll portrayed a range of expressions, and could turn from cute and adorable to psycho killer in a heartbeat. The camera angles made the film creepier, as did the music, and seeing the little doll sneaking around in the background with his knife ready to strike was terrifying.
I've never seen a film before or since that scared me so much, and I'll never look at dolls in the same way again.
There have been a few movies that use the doll theme such as dolly dearest, but none have been as successful as chucky.
**It's very hard to get hold of a copy of child's play these days, I've seen a box set of the first three movies in chartbusters, but it costs £150, so if you get an opportunity to see this movie grab it!
