This is the second review i have wrote on these compilation childrens dvd's. The one i am reviewing today is the "christmas childrens favourites" dvd. After installing a not so materialistic view of christmas into my children,( at least trying to!!!), one of their favourite things to get them in the festive spirit,(after making christmas cookies), is watching endless christmas themed dvds, so after spying this one last christmas i felt it was a worthwhile investment. The contents - as you would expect all the episodes on this single disc dvd are christmas or winter themed, all intent on inducing a fuzzy warm festive feeling!!!!
Episodes -
Oswald - The snow festival - When the big city autumn festival is snowed off, Oswald decides to take matters into his own hands....... This cartoon is quite watchable although not my favourite, my daughter enjoys it after she became aquainted with it on channel fives "Milkshake". (one of the many different childrens channels, that i call friend!!!)
Rubbadubbers - Sploshy of the arctic - On a hot day in the bathroom, Sploshy imagines joining the explorers and polar bears of the arctic!!!! Now this really is one of my favourites!!! The cartoon is colourful and imaginative. Also there is an endless array of storylines due to the fact the storys are based on the bathtoys imaginations, and what
they imagine they can do and be.
Percy the park keeper - Sledge ride - Percy decides its the perfect day to build a sledge. But what do you think happens when the animals have the same idea? I don't mind this cartoon, though with how slow moving it is, it does get a little boring after a while, the only really watchable part are the talking animals in the story as they are quite comical and entertaining!!This is one of a few cartoons on this dvd that are taken from a book story and feel this would have been better suited staying a in a book.
Barney - Bunches of boxes - Barney and his friends discover that ordinary boxes help make for an extraordinary day of fun!! My son absolutley adores Barney, and loves to sing the "i love you song", featured at the end of every episode, over and over and over............My daughter however has, i think, grown out of him and i have to be truthful, am slightly freaked out at the sight of a six foot, purple dinosaur,(its even worse if they watch it the morning after iv'e had skinful, i feel like im having some sort of a hallucination!!!!)
Angellina Ballerina - The gift - Angellina makes a beautiful hand-painted gift for Miss Lily, but will her present be good enough? Again this is not my favourite, but my daughter is at that really girly age, so this is her favourite, it combines her favourite things, dancing and the colour pink!!! The cartoon itself has not got crisp animations, but seems fuzzy and what i can only describe as girly (if that makes sense, no ,well be like that then!!!)
May i take this opportunity to apologise for giving my adult opinion on the cartoons and perhaps not my daughters who, in fairness is the expert in this field.I feel (like sooooo many other parents out there), that if i am to be forced to watch endless hours of childrens television i should at least enjoy some of it!!!!
Bob the builder - Bob and the big freeze - The snow brings plenty to do at farmer Pickles's farm. Bob and the team work together to make sure the animals won't have such a hard christmas! I love Bob, the animations are colourful, the storys are interesting, the characters are funny and i can do a mean impression of Roley!!! (which always adds to the ambience of the cartoon viewing!!!)
Pingu - Pingu's family celebration - Pingu and Pinga can't wait to see the tree that mum and dad have decorated, and to exchange presents! This is really the only non verbal cartoon i can watch, i don't even really notice the random"nuck, nuck", noises that they make as i feel the animation says so much more.
Kipper - Christmas eve - Everyone's presents are under the christmas tree. Only Arnold, it seems, can't wait until christmas day!!! This is another one of the cartoons taken from a book that i wish had been kept as a book. I don't mean that the cartoon is unwatchable, but more the fact the story seems so much more interesting in book form.
Brambly hedge - Winter story - The mice of Brambly hedge are preparing themselves for the first winter ball in years. However, with young Wilfred Toadflax having other things on his mind, will everything go according to plan? Again, this cartoon is taken from a book series, and with my daughter owning this particular story in book form, even she prefers the book to the animation.
Special features - Continuous random play, (plays all episodes, randomly non stop!!!) Brand descriptions Subtitles Animated menu
Also included, (as i mentioned in my last review of these dvds), are child friendly instructions on how you can go into the menu and select continuous play or specific episodes. On the leaflet that the above information is located, ( on the inside of dvd case), also has instructions on how to actually handle the disc itself - Make sure hands are clean and dry Handle carefully by holding only the edges Do not bend or scratch Use only in a dvd player Insert printed side up Keep away from heat, cold and liquids When not in use, keep in the box Use only when given permission to do so
All instructions on the leaflet are aimed at the child which makes it more personal to them.
Cost - This dvd was only £6.99 from wonderful Wilkinsons, (they have a small selection of childrens films at really cheap prices!!!).
I think this dvd is wonderful value and a good idea, as its not two hours of one thing, the child is less likely to lose interest!!!
Thanks for reading my review!!!
