When browsing through HMV a couple of months ago now, I found myself in the mood for trying something a bit different. I am a huge comedy fan, and knew that I wanted something from this genre, but not something that I’d ever seen before. I had a look through a lot of the stand up comedy DVDs, and ended up picking this Chris Rock DVD for a number of reasons. Firstly, it was only £5, which was pretty good since most standup offerings cost a tenner if not more, and with my student discount it would only set me back £4.50; secondly, I’ve only ever really seen British and Irish comedians’ shows before, and so fancied something from over the pond; and thirdly, I’d heard great things about Chris Rock, and every time I’d seen a clip of one of his shows I thought that it looked great.
So with my decision made I purchased a copy of Chris Rock: Never Scared, along with another three DVDs that I am working my way through reviewing (The Prestige, Good Night and Good Luck and the first series of A Bit of Fry and Laurie). Since The Prestige is one of my all time favourite films I watched it first, and then a couple of days later decided to go for this comedy when my boyfriend was over. I wasn’t totally sure what to expect from Chris Rock, as all stand up comedians (well, the good ones anyway) have their own particular style and I didn’t know what Rock’s would be like. For example, my favourite comedian and fellow Geordie Ross Noble has a very spontaneous show style, and whereas he does plan some material, most of it comes off the top of his head and is inspired by the audience or just weird stuff that happens, though Jimmy Carr does more short jokes rather than long stories or rants.
Chris Rock’s Never Scared show did have a very interesting style. He had clearly planned everything, but since there was never any pretence that it was spontaneous, that is in no way a bad thing, and the extent of his audience participation was mentioning a few couples in front rows, and pausing while they reacted to what he was staying. He didn’t really tell jokes as such, but had several topics for his show, through which he moved seamlessly and comedically. His main topics were black society, politics, sex, family, America, crime and women, though as his whole show flowed very well, his changes to other topics wasn’t particularly noticeable. Another part of his style was to repeat some sentences that he felt were important or funny enough to deserve it, which was good for any people who might have missed what he said the first time, and also emphasised his points, so that the audience knew to pay attention to it.
I did thoroughly enjoy this DVD, and am glad that I picked it up. I liked Rock just as much as many British comedians, though I did feel that his show was definitely aimed at a different audience to what I’m used to, namely African-Americans, and USA citizens in general. Many of his jokes and topics had many American references, and he did talk for a while about what it means to be an American (which I found very interesting). However, of course this is not at all surprising, as he is an American performing in the capital Washington DC, to a largely black audience, although I know that he does appeal to a large proportion of the population. Although the first ten minutes of the show seemed to be targeted mainly at the black people in the audience, as a white British person I felt in no way alienated for any of the show at all, although obviously there were a few references that I didn’t get.
The disc includes only one special feature, which is an early show that Rock did, and whereas it isn’t as long as the main feature and isn’t really as good, it does show that he has an amazing comedic talent that was prevalent even earlier on in his career. This bonus feature makes the DVD fantastic value, as it is essentially two shows for the price of one, and is a good treat for any fans of the comedian.
So, in conclusion, I would strongly recommend this DVD to any fans of stand up comedy, or just to anyone who likes a good laugh. He does appeal to almost everyone, although since he does talk about sex at times, you’re not going to enjoy it if you’re offended by that (though, haway, everybody does it). It’s only rated 15 so it’s not that bad really, though obviously I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone younger than that, as they’re not allowed it. It was an absolute bargain at the £4.50 I paid for it, and I’d be amazed if you managed to get it for any cheaper, but by all means shop around. I am very happy with this DVD, and not only have I watched it more than once already, I am also going to hunt out some of Chris Rock’s other stand up DVDs as I’m sure I’d enjoy them just as much too. Thanks for reading, and let me know if you give Chris rock a go!
Advantages: Allways has me in stiches Disadvantages: If you can't handle rudeness then don't watch it.
...very beginning of the DVD Chris jumps into jokes about strippers and their clear heels to shamed celebrities down to a somewhat disappointment about married life. All of the above of course as all been laid out as a joke, I would repeat some of them, but they are far too rude and I don't want to end up offending anyone. As I watched the DVD I constantly kept on thinking to myself Chris Rock cannot have much celebrity friends and if he does then damn, ... ...What I think Chris Rock as done really well in this DVD is that he not only makes you laugh but he also opens up your mind and makes you think broadly about certain subjects. For example, he talks a bit about America going to war against Iraq. He mentioned in this joke "They say Iraq is one of the most dangerous countries but if Iraq was so dangerous why did the Americans manage to take over so quickly" Come on now, you and I know that this is somehow ...

For anyone who doesnt ... ...life.
On this DVD chris is looking older now pushing 39 years old but i think over time he has just got better delivering a great performance.
His interaction with the crowd is minimal but i put this down to the sheer size of the audience he is in front of.
OK we start off with a view of the sell out crowd and chris takes to the stage, where he in relentless in his material, touching on subjects such as Rap music, michael jackson, R kelly, the ...
