Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Has got to go down as an all time favourite of mine, its been enjoyed in my family as far back as I can remember, and still just as popular today,
The story is based on the Potts family, Father Caracatus Potts (Dick Van Dyke) his two children Jemima (Heather Ripley) Jeremy (Adrian Hall) and Grandfather Potts played by (Lionel Jeffries).
Caracatus is an eccentric Inventor, who is trying to make ends meet, and support his family through his inventions, but to no avail. The children are enthralled with a rotting old race car, at the back of a nearby farm yard, they use it daily as there make believe car, but the farmer has over plans for it, its heading for the scrap yard,
After hearing the children's pleas Caracatacus is soon persuaded to buy the car from the Farmer, and sets about putting a few of his own inventions on the car, and giving it a full make over,
The children meanwhile, make friends with well to do Rich mans daughter, Truly Scrumptious (Sally Ann Howes), who soon goes about telling Caracatus how to bring up his
children, He soon puts her straight and sends her packing.
Caracatus soon has the car up and running and takes the children for a ride to the beach, on route, they hear the cars engine sound, has its pistons move the air, it makes a chitty, chitty sound and as the compressed air is omitted it gives a little double bang sound, here lies the tail of the cars name Chitty Chitty Bang Bang,
After a minor incident with the car of Truly Scrumptious, Caracatacus apologises and Truly is asked to join them on their trip,
After fun and frolics on the beach, Caratacus tells them a story of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, and as they listen in a marvellous adventure begins.
An attempt to steal the car on the orders of Baron and Baroness Bomburst (Gert Frobe and Anna Quayle) goes wrong, and Grandfather Potts is taken instead, who has mistakenly been identified as the inventor of the flying car and kidnapped.
Soon the Gang are on their trail, and are on a rescue mission with Chitty,
The Bomburst live in Castle in Transvultia, which is a terribly sad place where children have been outlawed, rounded up, and kept in a dungeon. The gang and Chitty invade the kingdom to rescue Grandfather,
There, they befriend a toy maker played by (Benny Hill) in one of his stock characters from his TV show) who hides the children while they attempt to free grandfather Potts.
Enter the Child Catcher, who lures the children with free lollipops and takes them away to the dungeon. Potts and the toy maker (who now only makes toys for the child-like king) hatch a plan to infiltrate the castle rescue the elder Potts and the twins and free all the other children as well.
Will the Potts win the day? Will Caracatus win the love of Truly? And will he finally invent something of use, and pull his families fortunes around? All these and more are answered in this, superb film, a real treat for Adults and Children alike, and an enjoyable timeless classic.
The joy and colourfull innocense of the film is a real delight, to see, there is so many beat em up and murder etc inclinded films these days, this film is like a breath of fresh air,
Brings back memories of childhood dreams I had, of the perfect country family life, lazy summer days, day dreams and of a marvellous car I still dream of owning one day.
