A starstudded film which looked interesting in the ads, 'China Gate' fails to be a success due to many reasons. Packed with talented and established stars like Danny Denzopa, Amrish Puri, Naseeruddin Shah, Om Puri, Khulbhushan and Mamta Kulkarni (as well as many more) this film could have been a slick hardhitting action thriller. Unfortunately with a weak script and poor direction 'China Gate' falls flat on its face.
Mamta Kulkarni plays Sandhia ... ...begins with her appealing to ex-army officer Om Puri for his help. He agrees and decides to get his former 'team' from the army together. Keep in mind that this is 17 years after their army days. You can tell that this film is average from the first scene of getting together. They come across as comedians and no one would ever believe that any of them (apart from Danny, Naseeruddin and Om Puri) were ever in the army. Anyway Om Puri names their mission ...

IT SPEAKS VOLUMES THAT ONLY A FORTNIGHT AFTER SEEING THE MOVIE I CAN BEARLY REMEMBER WHAT THE CHARECTERS WERE ABOUT, AND THE ONLY SONG I CAN REMEMBER IS CHAMA CHAMA.
IT'S A FORMULA PLOT LIFTED FROM THE MAGNIFICANT SEVEN EXCEPT WITHOUT THE POLISH. A GROUP OF VETERANS FROM THE INFAMOUS "CHINA GATE" MISSION REGROUP TO GO TO AN INDIAN VILLAGE TO HELP DEFEAT A BANDIT. ALONG THE WAY YOU HAVE THE USUAL ROMANCE, HINDU MUSLIM CONFLICT, AND OF COURSE ONE ... ...ARE GIVEN A PUSH TOWARD COMPLETING THE MISSION. ALL IN ALL DERIVATIVE DRIVEL THAT COULD HAVE BENEFITED FROM A FEW MORE DECENT SONGS, AND STRONGER CHARECTERS.
HAVING SAID THAT THERE WAS A GOOD PERFORMANCE FROM NASEERUDIN SHAH, AND THE AMRISH PURI CHARECTER WAS UNDERPINNING THE ENTIRE STORY.
