Director: Tom Holland Producer: David Kirschner. Writers: Don Mancini, John Lafia and Tom Holland Stars: Catherine Hicks, Chris Sarandon, Brad Dourif, Dinah Manoff, Alex Vincent, Tommy Swerdlow, Jack Colvin and Neil Giuntoli. Music by Joe Renzetti
Released in late 1988 this supernatural horror film used a seemingly innocent child's toy as a sadistic unstoppable killing machine.
**BRIEF PLOT**
When detective Mike Norris, (played by Chris Sarandon) pursues and kills Charles Lee Ray, {aka 'Chucky'}, the evil "Lakeshore Strangler," (played by Brad Dourif), he unleashes more than he can handle as before Charles Lee dies he uses an ancient voodoo ritual to transport his soul into a nearby child's toy 'Good Guy Doll'.
Meanwhile, a young boy named Andy Barclay, (played by Alex Vincent), wants a Good guy doll for his forthcoming birthday. His mother Karen, (played by Catherine Hicks), happens upon one from a drifter as the shop sell out fast of these highly sought dolls. It just so happens that the Doll Karen buys is the same doll Charles Lee was holding before he died, leading to some heinous horrors for Andy and his family.
'Chucky' the doll is out for revenge on the people who caused his premature death and is using the powers of voodoo to do his deeds.
**IN CONCLUSION**
A great horror movie with a fantastic added feature of the maniac being a funny looking child's toy. 'Chucky', as the doll like to be called, turns out to be a dab hand with a hammer and a hunting knife whilst still looking like a little lovable cuddly toy.
With a manic doll on the loose, killing anyone that gets in its way, there are not many people who can believe what is happening until it starts to happen to them, and by then it may be too late.
It is another movie of good verses bad, cops verses robbers, but with a bit of a difference as the 'bad' 'robber' is something out of the ordinary, in fact, totally out of the ordinary….
The movie does stretch the boundaries of reality as the lunatic doll begins his slaughter, the camera view giving the audience the impression that they are looking through Chucky's eyes… low level at knee height, slicing at peoples tendons, using the power of disbelief to distract his victims before he strikes.
This mad-cap movie has everything one wants, the usual romantic scenarios, the chase scenes and together with a comical side of seeing a childs toy coming alive and viciously attacking people, screaming like a demonic rag doll with a thirst for blood, it is a must see for everyone.
Would I recommend this movie…?
Hell yes… it is no doubt a fine movie as long as you realise that this movie is not intended to be taken too seriously….simply enjoy the comical horror as the funny looking doll runs amok in the suburbs.
