It's been twelve years since Paul Maud'dib Atreides's (Alec Newman, Frank Herbert's Dune) ... more
desert-dwelling Freman Jihad spread out across the universe to exterminate all that remained of the Old Imperial armies-twelve years of war as all the known planets were colonized, one-by-one, under Maud'dib's rule. Out of this chaos, the House Atreides has emerged as a superpower of Dune-the arid planet, Arrakis. But its imperial government is not omnipotent. Its greatest enemy, the fallen Baron Harkonnen (Ian McNeice, A Christmas Carol), still strives to regain control of Dune, its mysterious life force, and everything it represents to the galactic order. ?A far more insidious threat is poised and ready to strike within the treacherous House Atreides. As Maud'dib's secret enemies grow in number, his only chance to protect the family's supreme reign is in his new twins, born of his concubine, Chani (Barbara Kodetova, Dune). Soon, the hope for Dune will be in the hands of his young son Leto, heir to a power unimaginable. It will be Leto's responsibility to demystify the legacy of his father, raze the old regime, and restore peace to the Empire. But the ultimate battle has yet to be waged, and the children of Atreides-the children of Dune-will find themselves trapped in an unpredictable future.

Bringing the series to the screen has presented considerable challenges due to the sheer size, scale and complexity of the source material. Since Herbert creates an entire universe replete with a political, economic and social system attempting to recreate that on screen is a serious undertaking.
This dvd mini series which has been shown on both hallmark and the sc-fi channel and covers the second and third books in the series: dune messiah and children of dune. During this period we see Paul Atreides' chikdren evolve into full adults and suffer the consequnces of their father's actions.

Happily, they appear to have had a substantially increased budget from the first outing resulting in some of sets and costumes actually appearing less cardboard like than previously.

Being a huge Dune fan and consumer of anything remotely connected with the universe its difficult to be too impartial here. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing Herbert's creation up on screen and would recommend this to anyone. However, since this is the second mini-series unless you are very familiar with the books I would suggest watching the first series prior to this one. Even then the person i viewed this with having not read the books was a little confused in places.
Advantages: Better script, directing, acting, cgi etc Disadvantages: You'll need to watch Dune first otherwise it'll be incomprihensible
...basically sets the scene for Children of Dune. I am a huge Herbert fan and I think both the mini series’ are a big success despite low budgeting. I read all the books before watching Dune and about a year later realized that this follow-on had been made. I have to admit I was very skeptical before watching, as the dune books get more and more complex as they go on and politics is a main feature in Children of Dune, it’d be harder to keep this film ... ...by Alia herself.) The children are the objects of many political plots, but Leto decides on a future only Ghanima and himself can imagine. He goes on his rampage across the desert leaving everyone, including Ghanima thinking he’s dead to find his golden path. He follows visions and dreams of his father to a forbidden skietch, Jackaruto where he’s captured and an attempt to kill him brings about the start of his golden path. Leto forsakes his chance ...
