I am a huge horror fan and love to watch films with a bit of blood guts and gore. This film is no exception.
only read this if you have seen the film or are not really bothered about it as, it is quite in-depth.
I have marked the start and end of the indepth review with a row of asterix so it does not ruin it for you. Scroll down to a less in-depth as not to ruin the film if you have not seen it.
********************************************************************** The film starts with a madman being chased through the streets by the police. We later find out that this man is Charles Lee Ray (Brad Dourif), a weird criminal who is into the occult or voodoo. Anyway the chase goes on and Charles finds himself in a toy store avoiding the police. He is then injured and close to death lying on the toy store floor. As this evil monster is into voodoo he sees no option but to say a chant and transfer his soul into that of a 'good guy doll'. This doll is all the trend with the children; as is The Tweenys over here. While Charles or Chucky (as he is known in the underworld) is transferring his soul into the doll there is a lot of lightening and thunder, this then destroys the store. People then start looting the store. The possessed good guy doll then gets stolen.
The story then swaps to a little boy, a six-year-old named Andy (Alex Vincent) who trying is best at making breakfast for his mum. (burnt toast, milk everywhere, and a huge knob of butter). The little boy is watching T.V. and is watching the good guys television programme. It is Andy's birthday and he wants the latest good
guy doll. He asks and asks his mum for the doll. Anyway when it comes to opening his prezzie he receives a big package that is exactly the same size and shape as the good guy doll. He opens his present and to Andy's disappointment it is clothes from his mum, Karen (Catherine Hicks). His little face drops and he walks away with his head down. His mum sees his disappointment and realises how much he wants the doll.
Karen is in work and her friend Maggy (Dinah Manoff) comes to her and says that a guy in a back street is selling a good guy doll at a discount price, she rushes along and buys the doll regardless of how the street seller got it. She wraps it up and gives it to Andy, who is overjoyed at his gift from his mum. This is where the film starts to go weird and Andy starts talking to the doll. Different phrases that are on the box start top come out of Chuckey's mouth. Andy's mum asks Maggy to baby-sit as she has to work late due to the fact that she left work to get the doll. Aunt Maggy agrees; which was probably the biggest mistake of her life. She finds Andy talking to the doll, not going to bed and not brushing his teeth. Maggy gets annoyed and decides to separate the two (big mistake). She throws the doll about, like a, well, like a doll and chucky is not too pleased. Aunt Maggy ends up being his in the eye with a good guy hammer losing her balance and falling out of the window in a block of flats. Andy and his mum don't live on the bottom floor. Karen returns home to find police everywhere she rushes in to hear the bad news. A little detective work is done and the police suspect Andy as his good guy sneaker's footprints are in the sugar on the floor that was spilled during the struggle with Maggy and Chucky. Karen asks her son what happened, to which he replies, 'Chucky said, Aunt Maggy was a real bitch and got what she deserved. This horrifies Karen. More sinister things happen, Karen looks at the doll and realises that Chucky has been talking and moving his eyes without batteries, this is where Chucky comes alive and rolls under the sofa after biting Karen. Karen contacts Jack Santos (Tommy Swerdlow) the police officer who is investigating the murder of Maggy. She tries to tell him that the doll is alive or possessed and that his name is Charles Lee Ray. There is a car chase, a crash. Jack shoots Chucky and Chucky bleeds. He realises he is turning human inside the doll. He goes back to his voodoo teacher and informs him of what is happening. The voodoo man is horrified of how Charles has abused and misused voodoo and refuses how to tell Chucky how to become human in a human body. This is where the gory part happens. Chucky finds the voodoo man's voodoo doll and let me tell you it is soon revealed how Charles can be 'cured'. A few snapped legs later.
It turns out that chucky has to transfer his soul once again into that of a child. 'Yes' that child is Andy. There are many more chases and blood as Chucky tries to perform the voodoo transformation. After struggles with Karen the police officer and Andy Chuckey ends up in a fire but still not dead until a shot in the head finishes him off or so we think as there are four more Child's play films. **********************************************************************
The film is basically about a killer on the run that gets shot by police and before he dies he transfers his soul into a popular toy doll a 'good guy doll' using voodoo magic. As the killer charles lee ray stays in the plastic body it starts to become human. He then uses Andy, (the little boy who recieves the doll as a birthday present) for his own dark reason. Chucky needs to transfer his soul once again into Andy so that he can be totally human again. Before he does this though he goes on a killing rampage that leaves the viewer with plenty of gore and vivid imiges.
For me the acting in this film is excellent and believable, Catherine Hicks is excellent at playing a mother who is spooked by this ordeal and plays the excellent part of a mother who fears for her son's life. Andy is an adorable child who is an excellent child actor. You really believe that Andy has bonded with this evil doll and has become his best friend who has a sense of control over him.
The whole film has a sinister aura to it, the actors and the story complement each other and had me glued to my seat throughout.
I found this film on the whole excellent, the acting the make-up and the puppetry, this film had me scared of looking at my teddies when I went to bed at night. There is something quite wrong about a child's doll that goes on a killing spree. The film eradicates the innocence of a toy and replaces it with evil and torture, two things that should never go hand in hand.
There was much controversy regarding this film as it was linked to the two monsters who murdered poor little James Bulger. This link was made by the Sun newspaper although no inextreicable link was made. So I would not recommend this film to anyone who is under the age of 18 as it says on the box. This film was in fact nearly banned due to the linkage of the two.
I would recommend this film to horror buffs like me. The acting and story for me is exceptional and a must for horror fans. There was also a fim called Dolly Dearest which is about a littel girl who has a doll who comes to life due to an evil spirit that possesses the doll. I would not bother watching this as it is a direct rip off of the child's play fims and no where near as good story or acting wise. Child's play was the first of it's kind and cannot be beat by immitation films such as Dolly Dearest.
You can get this on ebay for around £5-8. (inc p+p) Also on Amazon new and used from £3.49 (not including p+p)
