Facing imminent death while laying eggs at Tweedy's English farm, a group of chickens led by the determined Ginger (Julia Sawahla, BBC-TV's ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS) plan to escape...
more...their prisonlike coop. The situation goes from bad to worse when the sinister Mrs. Tweedy (Miranda Richardson) decides to stop selling eggs and use the hens as the main ingredient in chicken pot pies. However, some hope literally falls from the sky in the form of Rocky (Mel Gibson), an American rooster who promises to teach the chickens how to fly. As the hens begin their struggle to get airborne, the monstrous pie-making machine arrives, giving the chickens precious little time to make their great escape.
Aardman Studios' first full-length feature film is a stunning showcase of stop-motion animation. Utilizing the unique Plasticine designs of the acclaimed WALLACE & GROMIT and CREATURE COMFORT shorts, CHICKEN RUN features vibrant visuals and colorful characters that are immediately endearing. (The naive and constantly knitting Babs, voiced by Jane Horrocks, is particularly hilarious.) With its clever writing, witty film references, and pitch-perfect combination of comedy, drama, and romance, CHICKEN RUN is one of those rare movies that genuinely appeals to viewers of every age.

Chicken Run is based on chickens living in a chicken farm, wanting to escape. They live in fear of their lives everyday, producing as many eggs as they can so that they will not end up on the owner’s table. It has all become to much for them as they know that every time they are called for a line up that there is a greater chance it will be them that is going to be dining with the Tweenies. Before you start to wonder, no it is not Fizz, Bella, Milo or Jake but the farm owners Mr and Mrs Tweenie.

They have spent ages thinking of plans to escape but they never succeed. It is always Ginger that gets caught by Mr Tweenie, who believes her to be a troublemaker. Previous plans have been to dig under the fence, sneak through in disguise when the gate is open and to catapult themselves over it. All times the guard dogs greeted them and ginger was sent to solitary confinement. That was being chucked in the coalbunker for a few days. One of the other chickens who is always found to be knitting convinces herself that Ginger is going on a holiday.

The last straw before the desperate bid to leave came when Edwina, one of the chickens failed to lay any eggs. It sadly resulted in her death and Ginger could not stand it any more. Her hero came in Rocky who was a rooster that escaped from a circus. He convinced everyone that he could fly so would help them to fly over the fence. It was from a cannon however so other help had to be enlisted. That was in the form of another rooster on the farm that was in the RAF. Normally they all ignore his bossy nature but this time he is of great use. The way they escape and the result will remain untold, as I don’t want to ruin the ending for you.

Ginger – She is the ringleader in the farm. Determined to escape from there she is always creating some plan with another chicken that is an engineerer. However the story is not all about escape for her as feelings for Rocky start to develop. She is left feeling very hurt and lonely when he explains that he can’t really fly. They didn’t like each other when they first met but the feelings grew between them.

Rocky – This American rooster flew in after escaping from a circus where he was catapulted from a cannon. He becomes an instant hit with the hens that follow him around every where. He starts them off on a gruelling training course trying to put off the idea of having to fly himself. When he knows they will find out that he can’t he leaves but is brought back to help them when he sees a poster advertising chicken pies. With the chickens used in them being the friends he just left behind. He falls in love with Ginger.

The Tweenies – These own the farm. It is the husband that looks after the farm with the wife wanting to make lots of money from it. He is determined to find out what the chickens are up to as he can see them being organised. However he thinks he is going mad, as his wife won’t believe anything he sees.

The mice – these two mice are sales mice. They will go around and look for whatever you want. At a price of course, with the chickens he wants them to give them eggs. Rocky is clever here when he wants something as he promises them the next egg he lays. They are not clever enough to realise that being a rooster he can’t lay any eggs.

Overall this is a great film with Mel Gibson starring as Rocky and Julia Sawalha being Ginger. It Is a PG and great fun for all the family. It is cartoon humour that will have you in stitches.
