After seeing the brilliant trailer for this film with the great songs I just had to see this film. Renee Zellweger and Catherine Zeta Jones are quite an odd pair to be in a film together but they were excellent. Renee Zellweger had the bigger part and after Bridget Jones' Diary she has shown she definitely has talent to taken on a musical and a difficult character. Renee definitely deserved the Golden Globe, Catherine Zeta Jones was excellent too but Renee had more to do. I was surprised at how good a singer Richard Gere was, he definitely did his character justice.

I am not sure if either Renee or Catherine will be nominated for an Oscar but I think one of them definitely should it is obvious by the finished result they have worked hard on this film. I forgot I was in the cinema some of the time because it felt like I was at the theatre with all of the vibrant outfits and lights and the singing. I think the music is great lots of brilliant songs. I would definitely see this film in theatre after watching the film.

Renee Zellwegere is not someone I would have thought of for this part, she has lost so much weight and is skinny. There are lots of female dancers in this film and some pervert at the back of the cinema when Renee flashed her leg began a dirty laugh. I'm sure the men will also like this film even if they wouldn't admit it.

This film begins in Chicago in the 30's I think when we see Velma Kelly (CZJ) arrive for her performance, her act is the Kelly sisters but unfortunately as explained later her sister has died so she is a solo act. Before she gets ready to perform we see her trying to wash blood off her hands. She sings the famous 'All That Jazz' and makes a great performance, what a powerful voice. She steals the show and Roxie Hart (RZ) watches her but is too busy kissing her furniture salesman. The only reason she is with him is because he has promised her she will meet his friends who can get her a part on stage but then he soon says he only "wanted a piece of that" and so she gets angry because he has lied to her and then she shoots him.

Roxie's husband was meant to lie for her and say he did it because Roxie has said a burglar came into the house but then when the name is said her husband recognizes it as the furniture salesman's name and starts to tell this to the police. Roxie is soon put in prison where she sees Velma Kelly has also ended up.

Roxie tells Velma that she was there the night she was arrested for killing her husband and sister who were having an affair, she doesn't care because she knows lots of people were too. Velma doesn't want any news to take over hers because she thinks everyone does something just to beat her story, Chicago is like that you can be famous for a minute until something else happens and then your fame is history.

Mama (Queen Latifah) works in the prison looking after the women and also doing them favours but she wants money in return. Roxie knows that she could have her name in history for being the first woman hung in that prison if she doesn't get her story done well so she needs a good lawyer. After listening in on Velma and Mama talking she decides to talk to her as well and ask Mama for advice. Mama suggests that she gets Billy Flynn to be her laywer he costs $5000 but he has never lost a case.

Billy Flynn is also Velma's lawyer and everyone wants him to help them but not everyone has enough money. Roxie's husbnad makes an appointment with Billy and only has $2000 but since he has still stuck by Roxie he decides he will help her. Once he does he changes her story and gets her sympathy by using the newspapers and also by changing her look, the only thing is she is like his puppet he talks while she sits there and answers no questions, he wants all the credit.

Roxie has her name in the papers for a while and starts to realize that soon she can pursue her dream and be on stage but then all of her plans are ruined when there is a new arrival at the jail (Lucy Liu) she has killed her husband and the two women he had slept with. Now she is the next big thing but not for long, Roxie does some quick thinking and faints. When she says the words I hope I didn't hurt the baby. As soon as she speaks she is surrounded by press and Billy Flynn turns round and takes her into a room to be checked if she is pregnant.

Velma does not like the attention Roxie is getting and because she is so desperate decides to ask Roxie to be in a double act with her because they can make money and do what they both want. Roxie does not want to do this though.

The court case begins soon and one of the Hungarian inmates is hung. Will Roxie be set free or will Billy Flynn lose a case? Well you will just have to go see Chicago and experience the music and entertainment for yourselves.

This is the best musical I have seen in a long time, I have bought the soundtrack because it si excellent. I liked Moulin Rouge also they are both brilliant musicals. Chicago shows off many unheard singing voice and Catherine Zeta Jones is a fantastic dance. I love the outfits in the film all of the glitter and all that jazz. This film is excellent and definitely one for all to not miss out on.
