that come to light when a psychotic killer starts killing teenagers. But the killer has an unusual criterion: only virgins are marked for death.Cherry Fallsis a striking movie that never got released in cinemas, probably because marketers didn't know what to do with it. It's not a winking, smirk-while-you-shriek twist on the genre likeScream, nor is it a broad parody likeScary Movie--instead,Cherry Fallstries (and largely succeeds) at trying to turn the clichés of slasher movies into something that will do more than make you jump in shock. It's still scary; few things are creepier than wandering the empty hallways of a high school after hours, andCherry Fallstakes full advantage of that. It's also often funny, mostly because the mechanics of a slasher movie have become just a little too much and you can't help laughing. But it also makes you think twice about attitudes towards sex--moments such as parents breaking into a brawl while talking about their children's sex activity, or an "experienced" girl's pep talk to an assembly of girls eager to lose their virginity, are both funny and caustic. Brittany Murphy (Clueless,Girl, Interrupted) shines as the sheriff's daughter caught in the middle of it all; Michael Biehn (The Terminator) is great as the earnest sheriff who knows more than he lets on; and Jay Mohr (Jerry Maguire) smoothly handles the part of a teacher with an unhealthy interest in Murphy.Cherry Fallsdoesn't tell you when it's funny or scary, which makes many viewers uncomfortable. But if you're interested in watching a slippery, layered examination of sexual attitudes that is also a successful, spooky slasher flick, then this movie is for you. --Bret Fetzer, Amazon.com

You know the scenario, you're in the video shop and you've got the choice of two films. The girlfriends got one teen slasher flick in her hands and you fancy a nice terror/psychological blockbuster. Who wins? Yep you've guessed it, we went home with Cherry falls, the film where you need to loose your virginity to stay alive. Nice.
The film is set in the aptly named Cherry Falls, a quiet suburban town in Middle America. The initial scenes set out the tone for the whole movie. Two love struck teenagers are smooching in a car when our vicious murderer overhears that they are about to make love for the first time in the back of their Chevrolet. They don't get this far as the male is knifed to death and our talent less bit part female is found tied to a tree with more knife wounds then a Jeremy Paxman - William Hague election interview. The terror begins! Whoopedo.
Brittany Murphy plays the lead character Jody Marken. Jody is the local sheriffs daughter, hence to say that he keeps quite a close stranglehold over Jody from the start. Murphy does have a certain sexual essence around her but in some of the opening scenes she frankly looks like Minnie Mouse with a ridiculous hat she wears. Still, forgiving this she is the one bright acting spark in he entire cast. Jodie's father Brent is played by Michael Biehn who has been in such films as Terminator, Aliens and The Abyss although I cant recall his parts in any of these films.
Brent starts out as the cool macho type but soon descends into wild panic. The common link, he discovers, between the growing numbers of victims is that they are all virgins. What a great story line huh?! Following this discovery the sheriff decides to call a meeting to tell all the parents of the gruesome fact. This sets up the first laughable scene of the film. All the parents end up fighting in a WWF fashion and our poor Brent can't keep order. Brilliant, give the director an Oscar. However, Brent is hiding more than his daughter is keen to know, what is his deep dark secret from the past??
In the backdrop of all this a comforting teacher is helping Jody through the ordeals of the murderers. Mr Marliston (Jay Mohr) is the recognisable one of the cast. You may remember him as Jerry Maguire's business enemy in the title film. Mohr was much better in the previously mentioned film than he is in this one. He must have been desperate for cash or a job because the levels that he stoops to here are bottomless. Now to the resident killer.
One of the worst 'slasher' killers appears in Cherry Falls. The killer, he/she (woo...the tension), dresses as a lady with a freaky hair-do and an even worse walk. Captain Pugwash would be proud of this walk; it's pure 'pirate with one leg' material!
If you cant guess who the killer is within the first 30 minutes of the film then you need your head examining. The plot is poor and, besides from glimpses from Murphy, the acting is laughable. As my girlfriend put it, the scenes head into almost Benny Hill comedy syndrome towards the end of the film. The film leaves you feeing cheated out of your money. Don't buy it...the film is so cheesy it's unbelievable.
------------------------------------ WARNING - THE STORY IS TOLD ------------------------------------
Well, here we go. Brent was involved in a gang rape when he was due to graduate with his school pals. The young girl, by the name of Laura Lee Sherman, craved the young Brent like mad and she became pregnant from the rape. She gave birth to our compassionate teacher, Mr Marliston. He wreaks revenge dressed as his mom for all the years of beatings he suffered from her frustrations. That's it, in a nutshell.
Bet ya want to go and get it don't yer!!! No....didn't think you did.
Advantages: puts the quality of other horror films in perspective Disadvantages: erm...it's crap?

QUICK PLOT OVERVIEW
- Person killing teenagers
- Mystery over the killers identity
- Gruesome murders
- Town Sheriff investigates
- Teenagers have a party
Sounds familiar?

- Town Sheriff investigates (THE TOWN SHERRIF IS NON OTHER THAN MICHAEL BIEHN .. MORE TO FOLLOW)
- Teenagers have a party (TO LOOSE THEIR VIRGINITY AND HENCE NOT GET MURDERED!)
I really wanted this film to be good since it featured Michael Biehn who has appeared in some of my favourite movies (Aliens, Terminator, The Abyss). But his performance in CF is pretty poor. Saying that, it’s actually ...

...outing in he form of Cherry Falls, directed by the same guy who brought us Urban Legend. It differs from the usual slasher flick in one rather ingenious way, putting an entire new postmodern spin on the whole thing. Interesting it is in this respect, but sadly there isn't much else to it to keep our interest.
It begins in the town of Cherry Falls, a name which is a play on the main focus of the movie. A killer is bumping off the local high school ... ...of the town organise a cherry popping party, so that they can all lose their virginity and be safe from the killer....and thats the general premise behind the entire movie. The rest of the plot is pretty much incidental because its all just flashing blades and blood the usual serial killer/slasher movie affair.
Slasher movies are always a pretty hit and miss affair but this one is really very miss and miss again. The fault lies mainly perhaps with ...

...on that line we find Cherry Falls, a small American town. Much like any American town nowadays... there's a crazed woman on the loose murdering teenagers. Unlike your Screams or your I Know What You Did Last Summers though, this slasher movie has a fairly decent motivation behind the killings, and doesn't rely solely on post-modern ideas to win you over. Advantages: Quite amusing in places - unintentionally of course! Disadvantages: Takes itself too seriously, nothing to make it stand out from any other teen horror.
I watched Cherry Falls tonight on video, so thought I would write an op while it's fresh in my mind. A friend and I wanted a light weight horror film - and this was certainly that!
There are no big names in the film - my friend, who is a bit of a film buff, thought she recognised a few of the characters from other films, but that was about it! I'd never seen any of them in my life before!
Cherry Falls, like so many other films these days, is set ... ...Falls. Its central character is Jodie, whose father is the town's Sheriff. Two high school students, friends of Jodie's, are murdered by a slasher at a local make-out spot, and the Sheriff is immediately on the case. Two more deaths follow, and a connection is made: all the victims were virgins. This for a start is quite ridiculous, as surely being a virgin at the age of 15 or 16 is not THAT unusual, but the Police seem to pick up on this immediately.

DVD Description
From Geoffrey Wright, the Australian director of ROMPER STOMPER, comes CHERRY FALLS, a horror flick that centers around a quiet Virginia town where a psychotic serial slasher is hunting down virginal teenagers. The solution: all the teenagers in town head out to a huge party where they will have an orgy, lose their virginity, and save themselves. Unfortunately, in the tradition of SCREAM, their plan is less than flawless. CHERRY FALLS is a murderous movie that promises to scare.
