Advantages: i liked the original, the trailer makes it look good Disadvantages: trailers always do...
Now, I have always been a sucker for the whole dance movie genre. "Girls Just Want To Have Fun", the "Step Up" movies, "Save the Last Dance" . . . loved them all. I guess I thought "Fame" was going to be a slightly more well-rounded (ie embracing arts OTHER than dance) version of one of those.
Boy, was I wrong.
I can't remember the original "Fame" all that well from my childhood, althought I do know I was a big fan of it at the time. And perhaps WERE I a tween again, I may have felt similarly. But I just couldn't. Perhaps I am just getting too old to appreciate it, but I came out of the cinema at the end of it feeling a distinct sense of "Was that it???"
But I don't like to give an opinion and not justify it, so where's what I found wrong with it...
First of all, there didn't really seem to be a POINT to the whole film. Which is I ...

of Gus Elen, Arthur Askey, Marie Lloyd, Dan Leno, Gracie Fields, Charles Colbourne (his performance of Two Lovely Black Eyes, probably the only political music hall comedy song ever!) is a real joy to watch and hear, even though when it was recorded when he was already a very old man.
George Laybourne was famous for the song Champagne Charlie. Incidentally, there is footage of Tommy Trinder portraying Laybourne singing this song in a role in a film.
There is also film of other stars, and audio recordings of others, such as Albert Chevalier, famed for his moving song, My Old Dutch.
It has no extras, runs for 75 minutes and even if you do not have an interest in music hall, I think you will like this DVD.
It is listed on Ciao as being available at £8.99. It will make an ideal present for someone you love or for yourself. ...
Advantages: erm.......... good songs Disadvantages: Weak plot and script, wooden acting
?t think this film would stand up in today?s market as it is. I think I will watch the remake to see if the film and storyline has been improved and revamped to make it stand out in today?s market.
I was slightly shocked with the use of bad language and nudity in this film as I really was not expecting it. My Nan was watching this with me at the time as she too commented on it. We were both wondering if this had been toned down or removed for the stage version of the film. If anyone has seen this on stage then please do let me know as both me and Nan would like to know.
The DVD which I have does have some bonus features which include:-
Commentary by Director Alan Parker
Class reunion Interview featuring Director Alan Parker and Co-stars Lee Curreri, Laura Dean, Gene Anthony Ray and Maureen Teefy
Making of Fame Featurettes
