What do you get when you cross a dope smoking hippie and an unemployed Mexican American? Cheech and Chong! Surprisingly, these two social outcasts have never really become household names over here like they have in the good old US of A. Chances are you will have seen Cheech Marin in one of the many minor appearances that he has appeared in (the mexican security guard in Ghostbusters for example) without even realizing who he is. Its a shame that they haven't taken off in this country, because they really are a fantastic pair of losers.
The plot of the film is certainly not to complicated and slightly farfetched, yet highly enjoyable. It is the type of film where you can switch off your brain, sit back and enjoy. It all starts off when Cheech goes for a drive in his "Love Machine" and picks up a hitch-hiker with large breasts who turns out to be... Chong! Surprise surprise. The two new found amigos soon find out they share a common love- marijuana. They then embark on a drug fuelled adventure, ultimately leading to them unknowingly smuggling a van made entirely out of marijuana from Tijuana back into the US.
It seems that one of the most tried and tested comedy formulas involves taking a pair of people and making them do stupid things. Del Boy and Rodney, Wayne and Garth, Bill and Ted, Laurel and Hardy, Withnail and I, and Richard and Judy are just a few examples. Imagine you took any of these pairs and added copious amounts of marijuana, a bit of coke, a few trips, and a few other substances and you would more or less have this film.
Basically what they do for most of the film is stagger around wasted, getting into situations that most people try to avoid and saying the word "man" at least twice in every sentence. The plot is irrelevant to the appeal of the film- it seems like most of the sequences contain a lot of ad-libbed material and you get the impression that it is the sort of film that everyone had an amazingly fun time making. The climax of the film is their performance at a Battle of the Bands competition, with Cheech appearing in a ballet tutu and dope smoke being filtered into the hall when their custom built weedvan goes up in flames.
Cheech and Chong are the type of people that you will either love or hate. There isn't really any middle ground in this film, you will either be thorougly entertained or you will feel like you have just wasted an hour and a half of your life. If you are the type of person that enjoys a more intellectual type of comedy, then I wouldn't really recommend it. For anyone who enjoyed Dumb and Dumber or Wayne's World and every long haired uni student hippy, it is a must see.
