make their film debut in this riotous rock'n'roll comedy, bringing with them the same madness, lifestyles and sketches that sold over 10 million records in the early '70s. Cheech and Chong's marijuana-laced humour keeps their spirits high and leads them to an outrageous finale at L.A.'s Roxy Theatre, where Cheech performs in a pink tutu and Chong dresses as a large red quaalude. It will make you feel very funny.

Up in smoke was filmed in 1978 and was the first of 10 films starring Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong.
Directors: Lou Adler and Tommy Chong Producers: Lou Adler and Lou Lombardo Writers: Tommy Chong and Cheech Marin Stars: Cheech Marin, Tommy Chong, Eddie Adams and Stacy Keech
[**This movie was given an 18 certificate, although it was banned in some countries as the authorities deemed it unsuitable for glorifying drug taking**]
Cheech and Chong played the parts of two drug addicts who spent their lives searching for their next marijuana hit. This is far from the violent movies that most drug addicted people portray, Cheech and Chong are very rarely violent as they are permanently 'stoned' and are incapable of fighting, they have a simple, relaxed way of life.
The film starts by introducing the two characters to the audience.
Chong, (who's character name Antony Stoner is mentioned only once, then he is only known as ' Man') comes from a good American family. He is an unemployed hippie who has a laid back attitude to life and feels misunderstood by his parents, who eventually gets kicked out of home by them and ends up on the street.
Cheech,(character name 'Pedro de Pacas') is your typical Mexican trying to earn a living just to live.
**CAUTION…THE FOLLOWING MY INVOLVE SPOILERS***
**PLOT**
Cheech is driving his 'passion wagon', (with the number plate MUF DVR), along the dusty road when he is conned into picking Cheech up from the side of the road due to some, let's say, false advertisng on Chongs part.
This is where the real fun starts and the drugs run freely, with Chong handing Cheech a big 'spliff' which he says is made with 'Labrador', the reason for this is just hilarious…… With there arrest and hilarious court case the side splitting laughter simply continues.
Hearing of an audition for a new group, called 'battle of the bands, they decide to form a band and head for the venue. As they head off to the venue they get involve in all sorts of scrapes…from a police raid on Pedros cousins house to deportation over the border to Mexico.
Their journey back to the states involves a truck which is not quite what it seems, two female hitchhikers who agree to join their band, a motorcycle cop who gets the munchies, a bunch of nuns who are stopped and strip searched for carrying drugs and a bunch of keystone cops headed by Sergeant Stedenko, (played well by Stacy Keach).
Will they make it to the Battle of the bands venue or not??? Only watching the movie will give you the answer….
**CONCLUSION**
I would give this film 10 out of 10 for pure acting brilliance. The way Cheech and Chong play the parts of a couple of pot heads is almost as if they were really stoned, you would have to give them a blood test to prove otherwise. (although Chong was imprisoned in 2003 for selling drug related 'equipment')
The story line is a bit hit and miss but the side splitting humour which slaps you in the face easily makes up for that.
**RECOMMENDED**
YES……. If you don't mind watching two people who are off their faces all the time, and have to endure every bit of bad luck that life throws at them, then you will love this film.
However…if you feel insulted by the above then I'd give this one a miss…as well as the other similar movies the pair made.
They are: Next Movie (1980) Nice dreams (1981) Things are tough all over (1982) Still smoking (1983) And finally the Corsican Brothers (1984)..
*(reviews on these may follow)
**FOR THE RECORD**

** Sold on www.Amazon.co.uk from £1.95 (used) to £4.97 (new)
Advantages: Great sound and picture on DVD for it’s age. Disadvantages: Sometimes annoying when many people are talking at once on screen
...may be in order.
Cheech and Chong started off doing sketch shows on American Television in the 70’s and went on to record comedy albums starring their most memorable characters.
Their brand of comedy attained a cult following, much like todays Fast Show, only it focused on darker subjects that the media didn’t want to touch in those days, Cannabis being the main item on their comic agenda.
Up in Smoke sees Richard “Cheech” ... ...get the DVD imported from the USA, as it features another 20 minutes of very funny deleted scenes, some of which feature characters from the Cheech and Chong stage show of the 70’s.
In summary, this film isn’t to everybody’s taste – but if you can dig it, do so! ...

Advantages: Will have you laughing from beginning to end Disadvantages: No proper storyline
...first in the collection by Cheech and Chong. It is about two stoners who are in search of dope, who end up being deported because immigration thinks that they are in the States illegally. Whilst in Mexico they pick up a job, which is a car made entirely out of Marijuana, and they are to bring it into the States. The duo unknowingly smuggle the marijuana van into the States. But things are never straight forward with Man and Pedro. They decided to ... ...still enjoy the humour of Cheech and Chong. A lot of the music used in the movie is done by Cheech and Chong themselves, as before they made their movie debut in this movie, they sold millions of records. The movie is so funny that it has you laughing from beginning to end, but it has you laughing out loud and by the end of the movie, you will be in pain from laughing too much. Quite an achievement for two stoners and their stoner antics. ...

...and an unemployed Mexican American? Cheech and Chong! Surprisingly, these two social outcasts have never really become household names over here like they have in the good old US of A. Chances are you will have seen Cheech Marin in one of the many minor appearances that he has appeared in (the mexican security guard in Ghostbusters for example) without even realizing who he is. Its a shame that they haven't taken off in this country, because they ... ...It all starts off when Cheech goes for a drive in his "Love Machine" and picks up a hitch-hiker with large breasts who turns out to be... Chong! Surprise surprise. The two new found amigos soon find out they share a common love- marijuana. They then embark on a drug fuelled adventure, ultimately leading to them unknowingly smuggling a van made entirely out of marijuana from Tijuana back into the US.
It seems that one of the most tried and tested ...

Cheech and Chong's first "hit" movie is a popular comedy for the red-eyed generation. The outrageous pair begin their search for green pastures and good grass. After several wacky adventures and close shaves ensue, the comedic duo end up at L.A.'s Roxy Theatre to perform a hilarious final scene. Without giving away too many clues, it can be said that a pink tutu and a red quaalude are involved. ITA winner.
