careers. But after they had a few kids, Kate gave up her career as a sportswriter, Tom abandoned his hope of becoming the coach of their alma mater's football team, and they moved their brood from the city to the country. Now, after twelve children and a happy life in rural Illinois, Tom has been offered the chance to live his dream and coach the Stallions. No sooner does the family pack up and move to Chicago to pursue Tom's dream job than Kate's ship comes in as well; a publisher has picked up her manuscript based on her experiences raising twelve children. Of course, there's a catch. Kate has to go to New York for a few days, leaving Tom to baby-sit his clan. Can Tom hold it together with his kids who didn't want to move in the first place pulling him one way and the university pulling him the other.
Advantages: FUNNY FAMILY MOVIE /STEVE MARTIN!!!! Disadvantages: NONE REALLY -MIGHT BE A LITTLE TO SENTIMENTAL FOR SOME ,BUT NOT OVERLY IN MY OPINION.
You know when you go to the supermarket you always notice how it is so much cheaper to buy in BULK ?!! Well the same could be said for raising children !? the MORE you have ,the cheaper per head it costs to feed clothe and water them!! Well that is what Steve Martin and Bonnie Hunts characters Tom and Kate would say anyway!
CHEAPERBY THE DOZEN is a family film, with a FUNNY and HEART WARMING story .
Mum ,played by 'Bonnie Hunt ' and , Dad Played by 'Steve Martin', First met at university, Tom was a senior with big hopes of becoming the head football coach there and Kate was a freshman with dreams of becoming a sports writer.
Both Tom and Kate had talked about how they would love to have a big family both agreeing on 8 children to be exact ,from that point new they were right for each other.
Just a year after they ...
Advantages: Bonnie Hunt, if you're theed Disadvantages: Standard Hollywood comedy fare, if you aren't so shallow in your considerations
.
It's not a great film, it's not a bad film. As a mild comedy it is a good success, and as a family drama it survives until just the last ten minutes before the gloppy sentimentality hits home. When it does, unfortunately, it hits home very hard indeed, but this is to be forgiven.
Cheaperby the Dozen has those paid preview thingies the weekend of Feb 7 and 8, and a proper release on Friday 13th. It's certificate PG for some cartoonish violence, vomit jokes and nothing else, really. It's 105 minutes or so, and feels just right, length-wise.
As a cinema film ~ 3 stars, not recommended, as it's so well-suited to home viewing.
As a video/DVD rental ~ four stars, recommended.
On the TV ~ four stars, recommended. It'll be a decent viewing for an afternoon.

Flying back from Florida recently, the choice of films on board was I have to say was rather disappointing, but I settled for CheaperBy The Dozen, a light comedy starring Steven Martin, who I do happen to like.
Steve Martin stars as Tom Baker, who has been married to Kate (Bonnie Hunt) for 23 years, originally they had only planned for 8 children but somehow it ended up being 12 (ridiculous I know). They live their life in utter chaos in a small town within Illinois, a place where the kids have grown up, a place where they truly have made home in every sense of the word, although only 11 of their kids are still at home. They still include their eldest daughter Nora within the family unit, although she is reluctant to be drawn back in, with 11 brothers and sisters, can you blame the poor girl?? She must be sick of the noise, not to ...

DVD Description
Clifton Webb stars in this lighthearted comedy as a patriarch who has more children than he can count on both hands. Along with his loving wife, played with dry humour by Myrna Loy, Frank Gilbreth must contend with the problems of five fathers. This includes a mass tonsillectomy and the eldest daughter's adolescent crises; her lack of a date to the school dance is solved skillfully by dad, who takes her himself! Based on the true story of Frank and Lillian Gibreth's child rearing adventures as they were depicted in the book written by two of their children, CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN is directed with a refreshing post-war optimism by Walter Lang. Though the huge family must be run with a workmanlike, though comic, efficiency, it is dad's charm and love for his offspring keeps the family together.
