well-made film that is sure to become a family classic. Directed by Gary Winick (13 Going on 30), the new version eschews the musical numbers of the 1973 cartoon and mixes CGI with live-action animals. Dakota Fanning brings the right amount of chutzpah to Fern, the young farm girl who rescues a runt, Wilbur, from death and visits him every day at her Uncle Homer's farm. But it's Wilbur's friendship with Charlotte the spider (voiced by Julia Roberts) that ultimately saves him from the "smoke house" (a kid-friendly alternative term to the slaughterhouse), for Charlotte's talent for weaving praiseworthy words about Wilbur into her web turns the Zuckerman farm into a tourist attraction. The more tragic elements of the book are handled sensitively by Winick, working from a script by Susannah Grant (Erin Brockovich), and Roberts' soothing, maternal voice (who knew it would work so well?) makes it all go down easy. It turns out to be just one of many perfect celebrity voice-casting choices, for the farm animals, voiced by an all-star cast including Oprah Winfrey (the goose), Robert Redford (the horse), Steve Buscemi (Templeton the rat), and John Cleese (the sheep), lend plenty of sharp humour. But it's two corn-hungry crows, voiced by Thomas Haden Church (Sideways) and OutKast's Andre "3000" Benjamin who steal the show.-- Ellen A. Kim

With the help of Templeton the rat who never did anything for anybody unless there was something in it for him and a wonderfully clever plan of her own Charlotte saved the life of Wilbur who by this time had grown up to be quite a pig. The animation is old school, no cultural referances, computer graphics, garish colours, Americanisms or Robin Williams voice overs and is much the better for it. The soundtrack is low key but effective.
I remembered this very fondly, and watched it again recently with my kids, so this is from a parent's perspective - if you get the chance, check this out, it's good clean wholesome fun and it has it's heart firmly in the right place. I feel deeply honoured to be the first on Ciao (and probably the last considering the 3p that this op is likely to earn!) to review it.
Well, one down, 255 to go to beat Chicken Run, go and watch Charlottes Web and them come back and write an op.
Advantages: Not only entertaining but has a moral value too Disadvantages: Not on DVD
I first saw Charlottes web when i was quite young and i absolutely loved it, Iwould watch it again and again but as time went on the video eventually got too old and was unwatchable.
Many years later i aquired the film again and was surprised to find I still loved everything about the film. It has everything an animated classic needs, sad parts, loyalty to friends, memorable songs and a happy ending.
The film is about a pig who is saved from being ... ...Wilbur. Being the runt of the litter the farmer doesn't expect Wilbur to live very long but he grows up big and strong and is sold to another farm and is entered in a best pig competition at the fair. Wilbur befriends a spider called Charlotte who during the compitition spins word into her web above Wilbur's pigsty to make him look special. Eventually though Charlotte dies but leaves Wilbur a legacy of three of her children who are too small to leave ...

Advantages: entertanment with substance Disadvantages: some sad parts
Some movies today. even ones that are made for children have not so nice words in them. With this movie i can put it on and know that the only thing my 3 year old will pick up from it is a good lession. I think that this movie shows that you can find a friend in some of the strangest of places. If you have ever read the book i would have to say that you will love the movie. In my openion the only bad part is that charlette does not make it through ... ...feel better and keeps kids at my sons age under standing what is going on with out makeing him sad . over all i would recamend this film to people of all ages that like a movie that can give you a range of emoshions , and just make you smile. ...
